Economic impact of the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games for the Fédération Equestre Internationale

The Deloitte Sports Business Group was engaged by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) to assess the economic impact of the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Normandy, to inform understanding of the impact of the event and to compare this to the economic impact of other, comparable, major sports events.

Through consultations with FEI management and the WEG local organising committee, we developed a series of expenditure assumptions relating to the event across the main stakeholder groups, namely spectators, sponsors, competing teams, event management and the media. We also conducted on-the-ground information gathering, the results of which were utilised in our economic impact model.

We calculated the economic impact associated with the 2014 FEI WEG using a model tailored to the French economy, incorporating direct, indirect and induced impacts.

Our analysis helped the FEI to understand how the impact of the FEI WEG in its present format compares to other major sporting events and provided an estimation to use with internal and external stakeholders.
