Privatisation of sports clubs
Government of Saudi Arabia
The Sports Business Group at Deloitte was commissioned by the Government of Saudi Arabia to conduct a feasibility study of the privatisation of leading sports clubs in Saudi Arabia.
The Privatisation and Development of Sports Investment Committee was established by the Government of Saudi Arabia to make recommendations to the Government regarding the potential privatisation of sports clubs in the Kingdom, the organisation of a private professional football league and the economic development of sport in Saudi Arabia.
The feasibility study was the culmination of a detailed technical and financial analysis and wide-ranging stakeholder consultations, real estate evaluations of clubs and stadia and regular meetings with the Committee, supported by a comprehensive benchmarking comparison against selected sports leagues.
Our work provided a thorough feasibility study into the privatisation of sports clubs and set out recommendations for the future privatisation of clubs in the Kingdom, including a plan for the preparation and implementation of the privatisation approach and investment in sports facilities, supported by a blueprint for the future structure and operation of Saudi Arabian professional football.
The blueprint set out recommendations relating to the governance, organisational and operational frameworks required and incorporated real estate assessments, financial forecasts and valuations that formed the basis of a submission to the Kingdom’s Supreme Economic Council for approval.
