Best Indirect Tax Team – Tolley’s Taxation Awards 2020

A team with purpose

We are delighted and very proud to announce that we have won Best VAT/Indirect Tax Team at the virtual yet prestigious Tolley’s Taxation Awards 2020

Since their debut in 2001, The Taxation Awards have become increasingly acknowledged as a marker of excellence within the tax sector. At the awards, a panel of six experienced judges recognise the finest achievements and talents of outstanding people and teams across the entire tax profession in the UK.

The category for Best VAT/Indirect Tax Team is for businesses that have proven specialist skills in providing exceptional advice in the field of indirect tax, and with the high quantity and quality of entries for this year, this showcases our impact on our clients, colleagues and wider society. Winning this award serves as testament to the high quality service and dedication of our Indirect Tax Team, who is now widely regarded as “a team with purpose”. It’s also worth celebrating that we were even shortlisted for two additional categories titled; ‘Best Specialist Tax Team in a Larger Firm’ and ‘Best Tax Disputes and Litigation Team’.

Given the difficult environment due to COVID-19, this year’s Tolley’s Taxation Award ceremony was held online on 14th May, where we (virtually) brushed shoulders with many other prestigious organisations. You can watch our winning moment on demand here.

With particular mention given to our team’s work with overseas governments, and mentoring at local schools, there are a number of remarkable achievements which have contributed to us being honoured with this award. Our Indirect Tax business has come a long way over the years, more specifically over the past 12 months, where we have seen significant developments within our people and teams.

Within Indirect Tax, we have created over 50 brand new jobs in the past 12 months, and we now employ 280 people in the UK. 25% of these new jobs went to school leavers who are currently training as analysts across the UK. This year we have also welcomed six new Directors, of which 50% are female. In addition to this, we’ve promoted three Directors to Partner and welcomed an additional partner to our business from another firm.

We have even launched a new part of our business, The Global Trade Bureau (GTB). GTB was established in 2019 and is now based in a remote Ipswich office, where our new team of 16 people are handling the urgent demand for customs compliance support. GTB has given our business new capabilities, and will inevitably enable us to serve our clients more efficiently.

As much as we enjoy working towards technological VAT solutions, and winning new business, we value our social obligations greatly. This year we’ve had fun working with and supporting the communities that we work in, where our people have enjoyed raising over £25,000 for our charity partners, including £10,000 for TaxAid UK.

The purposeful nature of our Indirect Tax Team can be exemplified through a statement made by Dan Barlow, our Head of Indirect Tax;

“I have worked in Deloitte’s Indirect Tax business for over 20 years, leading it for the last two years. During this time we have always been a business that helps clients get their indirect taxes right while at the same time creating new jobs, helping people to develop personally yet professionally and always being great fun.
Now, more than ever, it’s important for tax advisory businesses to demonstrate that they do the right thing and have a broad positive impact that goes far wider than growing revenue and profits. I’m proud, not only of the help that we give to our clients, but also the opportunities that we create for our people, being a force for good and a place that I look forward to coming to work in every day.”

We should be extremely proud to have received this level of recognition, as this will present great new opportunities for our business. Thank you to our people and our teams who have proven their hard work and dedication to our industry, and who have made a lasting impact on our firm, and the surrounding communities that we work in.
