Life at Deloitte
Houston commitment to our communities
On Friday, June 5, keep an eye out for hundreds of Deloitte professionals who are leaving behind their laptops, conference calls and emails to volunteer for Houston’s nonprofit organizations, including Student Veterans of America at the University of Houston, Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation and the United Way of Greater Houston. We’ll be the folks in the blue t-shirts throughout the Houston area, taking part in our 16th annual, nationwide day of community service—Impact Day.
Making an impact that matters is an ongoing commitment
Impact Day represents our organization’s ongoing commitment to the communities in which we live and work. Despite what the name ‘Impact Day’ implies, we strive to positively affect change in our communities every day. Though Impact Day is our most visible demonstration of corporate citizenship, our leaders and professionals volunteer their time and skills year-round to nonprofits across the US and right here in Houston.
In support of Deloitte’s strategic education initiatives, our professionals in Houston are making a positive impact on our local literacy crisis. We know that 1 in 5 Harris County residents are functionally illiterate. To tackle this challenge, Deloitte provides pro-bono consulting to the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation to support their year-round mission to mobilize community resources to improve literacy rates.
This collaboration led to the Blueprint for Community Action, a report that focuses on the cycle of low literacy in families and the correlation with negative social issues.
On Impact Day, our Deloitte professionals will work together to be part of the solution. Through our collaboration with Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation and CONNECT@6800 Bellaire, we will volunteer our time and skills to help more than 1,000 students in Kindergarten through 5th grade that attend William Sutton & Bruce Elementary Schools in HISD and the KIPP CONNECT Campus. Our volunteers will teach them a specialized curricula aimed at developing a life-long love of reading. This is one small but significant step in Deloitte’s ongoing effort to break the cycle of illiteracy in Houston so we can continue to build a business-ready workforce to support the city of Houston and its future growth.
Beyond our work in Houston, we expect tens of thousands more volunteers to contribute to more than 950 community service projects in more than 80 US communities, often focusing on causes that support youth education and veterans transitioning to civilian careers.
Impact Day is the one day each year when the people of Deloitte celebrate our corporate citizenship efforts as a group. So, if you see me or my colleagues out volunteering in our blue Deloitte t-shirts—ask us where we’re going. Maybe we can tell you about a great local nonprofit you’re not familiar with, but that inspires you to give of your time or funds.
