Deloitte Appoints Carey Oven as the Center for Board Effectiveness Leader; Announces Retirement of Deb DeHaas

NEW YORK, June 11, 2020 — Deloitte announced today that Carey Oven is the new national managing partner of the Center for Board Effectiveness. As the current chief talent officer for the Risk & Financial Advisory practice with Deloitte & Touche LLP, and co-leader for Detroit’s Board-Ready Women’s program, Carey will lead the Center in helping directors fulfill their oversight responsibilities to the organizations they serve throughout their board service. Carey will succeed Deborah (Deb) DeHaas, who is retiring in the fall of 2020 after 18 years with Deloitte. DeHaas has served as vice chairman and national managing partner at the Center for Board Effectiveness since 2014.

"Carey brings extensive experience and a deep understanding of Deloitte and our capabilities to this role," said DeHaas. "Her industry knowledge as well as her experience as it relates to talent, culture, governance and risk, will greatly enhance the work of the Center. Under Carey’s leadership, the Center will continue to help directors deliver greater value in the areas of governance and audit, strategy, risk, crisis management, innovation, compensation and succession. It’s been an honor to have served in this role for the last six years. I couldn’t be more excited to have Carey take on this role in such a defining moment for boards and their directors."

A graduate of Western Michigan University, Carey began her 28-year long career with Deloitte in the Detroit office in 1992. In addition to being the chief talent officer of the Risk & Financial Advisory practice, Carey is also a client service partner with Deloitte & Touche LLP. In this capacity, she provides a broad range of risk and control advisory services to clients and remains passionate in supporting our professionals’ well-being and Deloitte talent initiatives. Carey is also active in her community, serving on multiple nonprofit boards.

"I’m thrilled to be joining the Center for Board Effectiveness. Deb has worked tirelessly to build a top-notch team, and to create and promote a diverse and inclusive environment where leaders — both in and outside of Deloitte — can thrive," said Oven. "I honor and appreciate Deb’s mentorship, especially now that I’m stepping into a leadership role at a time where the public’s attention is increasingly focused on corporate governance. There is heightened attention on board oversight, culture and governing because of the pandemic; and I feel honored to be leading the Center at this critical juncture."

The Center for Board Effectiveness is focused on the lifecycle of the board member, with programs focused on current and future board members who are seeking board opportunities. Premier programming for current and future board and audit committee members include Deloitte symposiums, board education, board readiness, governance-focused forums as well as board and audit committee transition labs.
