Championship holes designed and rendered in 3D

Sand traps modeled in precise detail
New dimensions in golf viewing
For U.S. Open AR, thousands of user interactions were mapped, and every course element designed in detail. Location-based data was used to develop precise 2D base layers of every hole on both courses. Dimension was then added by molding layers to match course undulations. Next, textural and object layers like sand, grass, trees and buildings were added. Finally, all renderings are checked on-course for accuracy. The result is a beautiful 3D render that viewers can launch on any flat surface, zoom in on, and view from different angles.

New connections with every swing
To create a great user experience, we capture near real-time data from Championship play and convert it to the app where it’s viewed on the 3D course models — and we do it for 156 golfers scattered across 18 holes for both the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open, then serve it to mobile devices around the world, simultaneously. To meet the challenge, Deloitte built a custom analytics engine and platform to collect precise location-based data and convert that data to dynamic visualizations of players and shots at those same spots on the app’s 3D course model. That enables viewers to see where shots land, compare shots between players, create player pairings and more, using augmented reality.
