New dimensions in golf viewing

For U.S. Open AR, thousands of user interactions were mapped, and every course element designed in detail. Location-based data was used to develop precise 2D base layers of every hole on both courses. Dimension was then added by molding layers to match course undulations. Next, textural and object layers like sand, grass, trees and buildings were added. Finally, all renderings are checked on-course for accuracy. The result is a beautiful 3D render that viewers can launch on any flat surface, zoom in on, and view from different angles.

New connections with every swing

To create a great user experience, we capture near real-time data from Championship play and convert it to the app where it’s viewed on the 3D course models — and we do it for 156 golfers scattered across 18 holes for both the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open, then serve it to mobile devices around the world, simultaneously. To meet the challenge, Deloitte built a custom analytics engine and platform to collect precise location-based data and convert that data to dynamic visualizations of players and shots at those same spots on the app’s 3D course model. That enables viewers to see where shots land, compare shots between players, create player pairings and more, using augmented reality.

Driving toward the future of golf

As a trusted advisor to and sponsor of the USGA, we’ve collaborated on a variety of initiatives that have positively impacted the game of golf.

USGA Tees Up Growth Through Innovation

More people have taken up golf during the pandemic, and the USGA is trying to build on that momentum. Jon Podany, USGA’s Chief Commercial Officer, shares how his team is expanding the organization’s audience.

Reimagining a golf ecosystem

We helped the USGA deliver more value to its core constituents through developing recommendations to shape their future membership model, underpinned by stronger partner relationships with regional associations.

Making connections through golf

The Green Dot Golf Club (GDGC) was established in 2014 to bring Deloitte professionals together through the game of golf. With more than 5,000 active members, GDGC spans across 37 local chapters in the United States. In 2019, more than 1,500 Deloitte US professionals participated in PLAY9 outings, a strategic initiative to make golf more accessible for today’s players and enhance Deloitte’s commitment to wellbeing with an afternoon on the course.
