Betsy Zumwalt is a senior manager at Deloitte Consulting LLP with 24 years of retail consulting experience, the last 23 of which have been exclusively focused on the implementation, design, and development of Oracle Retail across a variety of retail verticals. Her experience lies in the financials areas of invoice matching, sales audit, and stock ledger. Positioning herself at the junction of operations and finance, Betsy uses her depth of product knowledge to help Deloitte’s clients comprehend how upstream processes influence their bottom line. She is a trusted advisor who navigates client account teams through large merchandise transformations, identifying strategic opportunities, crafting innovative solutions, and streamlining time-consuming or costly business processes.

Betsy grew up in the Midwest, living in Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas before settling in Austin, TX, with her husband and six-year-old daughter.

Tell us a bit about your career journey at Deloitte and the types of projects you work on.

I came to Deloitte as an experienced manager after working for small boutique consulting firms that specialized in implementing Oracle Retail. My journey at Deloitte has been marked by deep client engagement, complex problem-solving, and continuous professional growth. The unique opportunity to work closely with one client on their modernization journey has not only enhanced my skills but also reinforced the value of a client-centric approach in driving successful outcomes.

As a leader at Deloitte, how do you support consulting professionals to help prepare them for success?

As a leader at Deloitte, I am deeply committed to the principle of paying it forward, particularly through mentorship. This dedication is rooted in my belief that fostering the growth of consulting professionals is essential for their success and the overall advancement of our organization. By providing guidance, resources, and a supportive environment, I aim to empower Deloitte professionals to achieve their full potential and thrive in their careers.

What part of your day-to-day work at Deloitte do you most look forward to?

The people and the problem-solving aspects of my work are what I most look forward to each day at Deloitte. The meaningful connections I build with my colleagues and clients, combined with the joy of overcoming design challenges, make my role both fulfilling and exciting.

What unique opportunities at Deloitte have you found most effective in empowering within the organization and how have they impacted your career?

One of the most effective opportunities I have found at Deloitte in empowering within the organization is the exposure to a robust network of accomplished professionals in the Oracle practice. Unlike my past experiences in smaller organizations, where role models and mentors could be scarce, Deloitte offers a strong network of inspiring leaders who serve as both mentors and guides. This supportive network, coupled with continuous guidance, has significantly enhanced my career journey. It has empowered me to grow into an accomplished leader and mentor, providing me with the confidence and resources needed to succeed and advance in my career.

What keeps you busy outside of your work at Deloitte?

Outside of work at Deloitte, I dedicate a significant portion of my time to volunteering with local charities that support women, children, and the elderly. I am also an avid reader and cherish the magic of live performances at the theatre, a passion I look forward to sharing with my daughter.
