Q&A with Jessica

What was your focus at Deloitte?

When I first joined Deloitte out of undergrad, I started in the Sacramento office, where I had the opportunity to focus on state government projects. However, even while I was involved in the Public Sector industry, I took the greatest interest in the healthcare side of government. I worked on a lot of different projects in many industries throughout my career at Deloitte, but I always found a way back to healthcare and continued to explore my passion for this industry throughout my career with Deloitte.

What advice do you have for someone who’s about to graduate and considering their options?

I have to say that when I was an undergraduate student and searching for my first job out of school, I kind of just fell into consulting. However, after all the years, there is nothing that I would change about starting my career at Deloitte. I had such a remarkable, positive experience at Deloitte and enjoyed doing the various work that I did and meeting all the people that I met. You just can’t get the same valuable experience anywhere else starting off as a new professional. There is no better way to start your career if you’re looking to accomplish a long term career in business. There is not a day that goes by that I’m not thankful for my Deloitte experience.

How have the skills you learned at Deloitte help you in your career?

The invaluable experience you gain throughout a career in consulting prepares you for any situation you may come across in a business setting. For example, I am able to adapt and work with any set of people, regardless of where I am or who I am with. The skills I gained at Deloitte have been an important part of what’s made me successful in my career. At Deloitte, you learn to equip yourself with a sense of flexibility and the patience to work with people to accomplish an objective. Additionally, you develop a foundation for strong communication skills that have come in handy throughout my career.

How have you leveraged your Deloitte network since leaving?

I actually recently hired someone on my team that was also a Business Analyst at Deloitte back in the day, though she was a Senior Consultant at the time she left Deloitte. I’m glad to have her at Kaiser Permanente with me as she is a clear leader and has a similar work ethic. I’ve also stayed in touch with a number of people that I knew while working for Deloitte. It’s a network that will never go away and I know that if I ever need help in my current role, I can look to my Deloitte mentors and colleagues still for advice.

What makes Deloitte Consulting different? How has this impacted you?

When I was an MBA student at UCLA (as part of Deloitte's Graduate School Assistance Program), I got involved in a little bit of recruiting for other organizations and none of them ever impressed me the same way that Deloitte did. What stood out about Deloitte was that they truly wanted to know about me and my experiences; it was such a personal touch. The people I worked with at the Deloitte were genuinely interested in helping me be successful in the long-run, not just the project or activity we were working on at the time.
