2018 Deloitte Renewable Energy Seminar recap

The 2018 Deloitte Renewable Energy Seminar, Scaling new heights, wrapped up successfully on August 17, in Denver, Colorado, the “mile-high city.” For two-and-a-half days, more than 300 participants heard from global leaders in the renewable energy industry, learning about the bright outlook for wind and solar growth, despite the somewhat dimmer outlook for US fiscal health. Speakers shared insights, including that “the momentum is here” for offshore wind, which is now cost-competitive in the Northeast. Industry leaders also commented that renewable energy asset buyers are still interested in existing wind and solar plants, and are increasingly willing to pay for pipelines of renewable projects in development as well. Participants also learned that with markets awash in capital, it’s a great time to be a seller, but that there are also plenty of opportunities for buyers. Speakers shared how utilities are innovating to meet their customers’ growing needs for cleaner energy and more flexibility and that to reach 100 percent renewables, utilities need to engage the entire community and a growing ecosystem of companies and technology partners. During lunch, participants heard from Gary Golden, Energy Futurist, who provided insight into the future of energy systems, and explored the hype vs. hope dynamics of new technologies, policy changes, clean fuel portfolios, and business model innovations associated with a range of new energy systems. Participants also had the opportunity to take a deeper dive into the accounting, tax, and digital implications around innovation, risk management, and blockchain.
