Jason is a principal in our National Federal Tax Services (“NFTS”) practice and is the Leader of the National Tax Controversy Services (“NTCS”) service line within NFTS. He sits in the firm’s Charlotte, NC, office.
Jason has extensive experience in resolving federal tax controversy disputes before the IRS Examination function, at IRS Appeals, and in trial and appellate litigation. He has represented an array of taxpayers facing a host of federal tax issues. His litigation experience includes litigation involving the professional golfer, Sergio Garcia (Sergio Garcia v. Commissioner, 140 T.C. 6 (2013)) (allocation of compensation paid pursuant to an endorsement agreement between royalty income and personal services income), as well as the multinational medical device manufacturer, Medtronic (Medtronic, Inc. v. Commissioner, T.C. Memo. 2016-112 (2016)) (transfer pricing dispute involving arm’s length royalties to be paid in exchange for intangible property licensed to foreign subsidiary). His Exam and Appeals experience includes dispute resolution on behalf of numerous multinational corporations in the life sciences and technology spaces.
Jason is, further, adept at employing various alternative dispute resolution techniques, including Fast Track Settlement and Mediation, pre-filing agreements, and post-Appeals mediation. He is similarly well-versed in all aspects of IRS practice and procedure, including, for example, the procedural rules governing penalty abatement requests, assessment statute management, claims for refund, management of tax attributes, and section 9100 relief requests.
Jason speaks frequently regarding tax issues and has presented at numerous conferences, including those sponsored by the Tax Executives Institute and Bloomberg BNA. He has, further, written several articles that have appeared in publications, including Tax Notes International.
Prior to joining Deloitte, Jason was a partner in the tax controversy practice of a multinational law firm.
Jason has a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A. in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
