Jonathan is an innovative marketing leader, growth strategist, and thought leader with more than 35 years of experience working at the intersection of brand, marketing strategy, content marketing, and marketing technology. As a CMO, consultant, and board member, Jonathan delivers measurable and impactful results by anticipating customer needs, repositioning brands, architecting fresh “go-market-solutions,” creatively applying new technologies, streamlining customer-facing operations, building strong teams, and engaging diverse stakeholders.
Jonathan joined Deloitte as a consulting principal in 1997, focused on providing marketing and growth strategy services. Deloitte leaders repeatedly sought out Jonathan to take on challenging leadership roles. These roles included launching and managing the Customer and Marketing Strategy practice. He also led the $100+ million Midwest Strategy & Operations practice, which experienced double-digit growth rates during his tenure.
In 2011, Deloitte’s Chief Strategy Officer asked Jonathan to take on the role of Chief Content Officer. After Jonathan assumed the role, Deloitte quickly gained widespread recognition as a leader in professional services thought leadership, rising from a #18 ranking to the #1 ranking according to industry analyst, Source for Consulting.
Jonathan created Deloitte’s signature thought leadership brand, developed the first massive open online course (MOOC) offered by a professional services firm, introduced new distribution channels, established partnerships with top-tier academic institutions, and pioneered the use of advanced data analytics and visualization techniques. Based on these successes, Jonathan was asked to lead Deloitte’s brand, digital, and corporate social responsibility activities, as well as Deloitte’s Global Insights program. Jonathan also advised Deloitte’s Chief Risk Officer in developing Deloitte’s reputational risk management program.
Jonathan assumed the role of Chief Marketing Officer for Deloitte’s $7+ billion US Consulting business in 2015. As CMO, Jonathan applied his expertise in branding and marketing strategy to lead a highly successful repositioning initiative that included the debut of Deloitte's award-winning advertising program and double-digit gains in awareness. He also recruited a highly talented individual as his successor.
Jonathan has participated in more than 35 bylined articles and interviews with leading business journals, including The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, and Businessweek. His critically acclaimed book, Brand Resilience, was published in 2011. He is currently writing a book on digital maturity. Jonathan is a member of the advisory boards of Applied Marketing Analytics and the Northwestern Spiegel Research Center on Integrated Marketing Communications. He teaches marketing at Northwestern University.
On a personal note, Jonathan has completed more than 25 marathons and long-distance relays and serves as a marathon training pace group leader. Jonathan is active in Chicago’s not-for-profit community and has advised numerous organizations, including Bunker Labs, an incubator for veteran-led start-ups, the Chicago Community Trust, Chicago Run, City Year Chicago, and the Field Museum. He worked closely with the United States Olympic Committee as part of Deloitte’s sponsorship. He currently serves on the board of Chicago Public Media.
Jonathan graduated from Haverford College and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received his MBA from Stanford University, where he was also in the Public Management Program and was named an Arjay Miller Scholar, in recognition of outstanding academic performance.
