Nicola is an International Tax and Transfer Pricing principal and senior economist at Deloitte and is based out of the firm’s Chicago office. He has more than 15 years of experience assisting multinational clients with their international tax and transfer pricing matters in planning, compliance, and controversy settings. His clients include leading life sciences, health care, technology, food and beverage, consumer products, and financial services multinationals.

From a controversy perspective, Nicola is the US Transfer Pricing Controversy leader. In this capacity, he assists clients and clients’ counsel throughout the tax planning life cycle, and coordinates to provide the following economic support services worldwide: independent transfer pricing perspectives and analysis; audit & appeals support and data-services; and litigation support, including expert witness testimony. In his experiences, he has provided litigation support to four clients in US Tax Court as well as represented clients in numerous US and foreign tax audits, advance pricing agreements (APAs), and appeals.

Nicola is also Deloitte’s Transfer Pricing Life Sciences and Health Care leader for the Americas region, serving pharmaceutical, medical device, and health care companies clients with their international tax and transfer pricing needs, including complex intangible property valuations, cost sharing arrangements, audit defense, and litigations. In his role, he also serves as a technical and marketing resource to the practice, coordinating globally across the Deloitte network of firms.

Nicola is active in speaking and publishing in various international tax and transfer pricing industry forums on his experiences. His publications have examined the economic useful life of marketing intangibles, the role of intangible assets in driving firm value and profitability, as well as US corporate tax reform’s impact on US multinational competitiveness.

Nicola obtained a Ph.D. in Economics from Boston College, where he taught statistics and macroeconomics. Prior to his career in international tax and transfer pricing, he gained extensive government and private sector work experience as an Economist, including time at the Federal Reserve Banks of Boston and Kansas City as well as the Congressional Budget Office in Washington, DC.
