Elliot has over 14 years of indirect tax experience, primarily in VAT. This experience has been gained from working across a number of jurisdictions. He has worked for both tax authorities and practiced in a professional services environment.
Skills and Experience
Elliot is based in Abu Dhabi, during the UAE VAT implementation he assisted a national Oil and Gas company to get VAT ready. He is currently advising a wide range of clients, including Oil and Gas companies and those related to them. Prior to joining Deloitte Elliot worked in Malaysia, where he advised 6 out of the top 10 biggest companies. During his time in Malaysia Elliot worked on a number of GST Implementation projects with a particular focus on ensuring the successful implementation of GST for Government Linked Companies (GLC), notably the national energy company. He spent 8 months on secondment to the national Oil and Gas company, assisting in building their GST compliance function. In addition to this he has also designed and delivered training to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department on GST auditing techniques. He provided both compliance services to global clients who based their compliance functions in Malaysia.
Prior to this he was a GST Senior Compliance Officer with the States of Jersey, a British Crown Dependency. His task was to overseeing GST which was introduced to the country in May 2008. In Jersey he was involved in identifying non-compliance, risk profiling, conducting business audits, transferring his knowledge of conducting VAT audits to existing GST staff and ensuring VAT policy and legislation was effective and protected Government revenue.
Before this Elliot worked with Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) as a VAT Higher Officer. During his time in HMRC, Elliot was involved in assurance visits to customers with complex indirect tax issues and/or serious non-compliance, and preparing cases of serious non-compliance for submission to the Civil or Criminal sections, training staff and initiating cross tax working where by joint visits would be undertaken by different sections of the department simultaneously.
