What would be your advice to individuals joining the AGR programme?

Trust the process. Do not be afraid to put in the work. At first, the responsibilities you will be tasked with might seem daunting, but trust that you are a work in progress. Be ready and willing to learn and accept that you probably will not know how to go about some of the assignments you will be given. Accept that you will make mistakes in the beginning but be smart enough not to repeat them and instead learn from them. Respect those who have been here before you. Build resilience. Know that a lot will be expected from you and always aim to deliver the highest quality of work. Lastly, have passion for what you do. When you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.

What have been the highlights of your career at Deloitte?

Recognition of my contribution to the team by way of compliments by my seniors and being entrusted with more work. It is one of the biggest honours - good work getting rewarded with more work.

What have you been able to do at Deloitte that would not have been possible elsewhere?

Deloitte has given me the opportunity to jointly work with my superiors, having direct access to them, and being trusted to own and deliver on specific parts of projects way above my skillset. What this has done for my confidence is priceless. It is one of the best and fastest ways to grow and take on more responsibilities.

Deloitte demystifies the workplace, leadership, and teamwork. Our culture is all about working together to deliver solutions to clients, taking care of each other, and having fun while at it. Only a progressive organisation would offer this sense of camaraderie and community. I believe this kind of exposure has accelerated my growth.

It is never a dull or typical day at work, the nature of work is dynamic. One day I could be working on a due diligence assignment in the telecommunications industry while the next day I will be doing market research on the hotel industry. Knowledge from one industry can offer insight on another. The calibre of clients we attract and the complexity of their assignments provides enough challenge to keep expanding our skills and scope of knowledge.

What have you appreciated most about the culture at Deloitte?

Every team member is valued. My contribution is acknowledged and appreciated. Jointly working with my more experienced seniors has given me great exposure as I gain from their insights. In some organisations, this is far-fetched. That Deloitte is not big on hierarchy does it for me. We are all human and with unique value that we bring to the table. Deloitte offers you a chance to showcase your work, be seen, and be heard.

The firm is intentional about developing and supporting a holistic individual. Be it the D-Space (our recreational space), our gym, our massage parlour, our prayer rooms etc.

Great people. Great vibes.

What opportunities has Deloitte given you in terms of exposure and development?

Exposure to driven and accomplished people. The drive and work ethic rubs off on you. I have opened my mind to dreaming bigger. Working alongside professionals with decades of experience is my greatest highlight. I sincerely believe that there is no better way to learn. Having them take me as one of them, guide me, teach me, encourage me, share their experiences with me, and listen to my ideas has been an honour. We have developed a friendship that transcends work, and this is testament to Deloitte's culture.

Deloitte nature of being a market leader attracts clients who are also market leaders in their own spaces. This has given me a better understanding of industries at a national and regional level.

What have been your greatest achievements while at Deloitte and how has it progressed your career?

Having studied Architecture and seeking to transition to a career in the financial world, Deloitte offered me the perfect chance in Financial Advisory. This has given me a foundation to develop and advance my skills. The training has proved effective as I was able to fully settle in and immediately start contributing.

People really do live by the Deloitte values. Deloitte staff serve with integrity by always conducting independence and risk checks before embarking on new projects. We also take care of each other and this was demonstrated when the COVID-19 pandemic hit Kenya. At the moment, we are majorly working from home to mitigate the spread of the virus. Additionally, Deloitte negotiated with our insurance provider to cater for the cost of the COVID-19 test.

What opportunities has Deloitte given you in terms of exposure and development?

There are many learning opportunities and varied learning platforms. Just recently, I was able to access videos that enabled me to effectively read for my professional exams.

Also, in Financial Advisory, junior analysts are included in client calls. This really goes a long way in building confidence and fine-tuning one’s negotiation and client management skills.

What have been your greatest achievements while at Deloitte and how has
it progressed your career?

I was part of the East Africa proposal team that worked on a big winning proposal. Having won the proposal, I am now part of the assignment team on this exciting opportunity being implemented in Ethiopia.

I was part of the team that worked on the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on East African economies publication. The publication provided insights on the expected economic impacts of COVID-19 in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda as well as various measures proposed by said governments to mitigate the impact.

What would be your advice to individuals joining the AGR programme?

Be honest – If you are unsure about something, have the courage to enquire from team members. If you are truly ignorant of something, have the humility to say, “I do not know ‘abcd’…, but if you give me pointers, I can research/find out more about it.”

Be yourself and have fun! – When you have confidence, you can have a lot of fun and when you have fun, you can do amazing things. ~ Joe Namath

What have you been able to do at Deloitte that would not have been possible elsewhere?

I have been able to meet the best minds from different backgrounds since Deloitte picks the very best graduates irrespective of what they studied. I studied engineering, however I work in a completely different field and environment. Additionally, Deloitte promotes diversity, hence I get to interact with  colleagues from different backgrounds, which would not have been possible anywhere else.

What opportunities has Deloitte given you in terms of exposure and development?

In terms of exposure, I have had the opportunity to learn from the journey of top
executives in the country through Brown Bag sessions organized by Deloitte. This is a platform in which Deloitte hosts leading industry players who share their stories and lessons learnt in their career journey.

I have access to an entire network of Deloitte professionals globally and learning resources from e-learning portal, which has helped to accelerate my career growth.

As far as development goes, Deloitte offers countless opportunities to work and travel to other countries (global mobility) and exposure to different industries in the corporate environment. I have had the privilege of working in many sectors such as energy, banking, insurance, non-governmental organizations, manufacturing, and aviation and hence an opportunity to gain knowledge and expertise in all these industries.

I am now able to focus on this and take the necessary steps in order to get to where I want to be.

Personally, the nature of my work has enabled me to be a better planner and I have learnt how to be accountable to myself. Our work is based on delivery of certain objectives and so it has been upon me to learn how to distribute my time between work, family and other commitments.

What have you appreciated most about the culture at Deloitte?

At Deloitte, no issue is beneath anyone, regardless of your title or level at the firm. People are always willing and will create time to help. I have had more than enough instances where a manager or a partner made themselves accessible and went out of their way to provide guidance during times of crisis. Deloitte relishes teamwork, which is integral to our role in providing solutions to our clients while simultaneously building confidence in the team and individual capabilities.

While we cannot always pay back the kindness shown to us, we strive to pay forward.

What have been your greatest achievements while at Deloitte and how has it progressed your career?

Deloitte has given me the opportunity to work with multiple clients across different industry sectors including banking, oil and gas, logistics, and manufacturing. My biggest achievement has been to gain a working understanding of the different business models against the backdrop of the current legal and regulatory environment, which led to a growth of 60% in my client portfolio within my first year at Deloitte. This has enabled me to leverage on and gain confidence in my skills across a variety of industries and functions, which in turn not only boosts my professional equity but also translates to value addition to our clients.

Familiarize yourself with the role that you are applying to but also look at other offerings within Deloitte. Always keep an open mind, be inquisitive and have a teachable attitude. Anyone can teach you something and you will learn a lot more on the job than you would in a classroom.

How has your work made an impact on yourself and your clients?

Since joining Deloitte, I have learnt how to handle multiple tasks, meet tight deadlines, and manage different stakeholder relationships. In our line of work, we are constantly required to collaborate on different tasks with colleagues and
