Single African Air Transport Market

Is Africa ready?

The report looks at the launch of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) more commonly referred to as the Open Skies Treaty In Africa and the mechanism needed to make it a reality.

The liberalisation of civil aviation in Africa and as an impetus to the Continent’s economic integration agenda led to the launch of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). The Open Sky agreement, originally signed by 23 out of 55 Member States, aimed to create a single unified air transport market in Africa. However there is a need to ensure all aspects of the treaty such as ownership and effective control, eligibility, infrastructure, capacity and frequency of flights are considered to ensure success.
