Enabling people with disabilities

In South Africa, persons with disabilities face untold challenges, some of which include discrimination in access to education and the job market. Persons with disabilities continue to be severely under-represented in the South African workforce. In 2017 Deloitte began investing in skills development for persons with disabilities through sponsorships and practical workplace experience.

Deloitte South Africa’s annual investment of R5.7 million in this skills-development initiative for persons with disabilities is about making a meaningful impact in the lives of our learners by helping them to achieve qualifications they would not ordinarily have received. This impact is achieved by actively supporting students on their academic journeys, exposing them to real-world experience and, where possible, helping them to find fulltime employment.

In 2020, 89 learners participated in the skills development programme for persons with disabilities. The learners selected for the one-year Business Administration learnership which is accredited by the country’s Sector of Education and Training Authority, are from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and have a permanent disability.
