2021 Deloitte Africa Impact Report

At Deloitte, we recognise that our license to operate relies on our ability to truly live our Purpose of making an impact that matters for our people, our clients and society. The expectations of business have fundamentally shifted, with an increasing scrutiny on the role that business plays in contributing to the societies in which it operates and on our planet. Deloitte’s Purpose is central to how we conduct our business, the clients we work with, the work we do and the working environment we provide to our people.

Our Purpose is underpinned by our commitment to being a responsible business, which outlines the principles we believe in and the commitments we have made. These are embedded in our policies and inform our core decision making as a business.

Strong governance and leadership is the foundation of our firm: determining our Purpose and Strategy, setting the tone for ethical and responsible decision-making throughout the firm, and ensuring transparency and accountability to external stakeholders and to our people.

Deloitte Africa is governed by the Deloitte Africa Board, composed of Independent Non-executive Directors, exofficio Executives, and a cross-representation of partners of the firm. The Board provides oversight on key matters including governance, strategy, alignment to the global firm, transformation, risk issues and regulatory matters.

The Deloitte Africa Executive, currently composed of 13 senior leaders from Deloitte Africa, is responsible for embedding Deloitte’s Purpose and advancing its strategic business priorities.

Public Interest Council

The inaugural Deloitte Africa Public Interest Council was launched in May 2019. The Council consists of five independent members chosen for their pertinent role in society, business as well as structures upholding governance and ethics. The purpose behind establishing the Public Interest Council was to help the firm further understand the impact of our activities on the public interest, through constructive engagement with key stakeholders in society. The Public Interest Council does not hold decision-making powers in relation to Deloitte Africa, nor is it accountable for the actions taken by the firm pursuant to its recommendations. Council members collectively provide perspectives of business, government, and civil society to allow for robust discussions and viewpoints.

Embracing a purpose-driven mindset means more than just doing the right thing at an organisational level. It is also about using our spheres of influence to help effect change within the ecosystems we operate in. We continue to support and advance efforts to bolster trust and confidence in the business accountability ecosystem, through proactive engagement with government, regulators and key stakeholders in the profession as well as active participation in shaping legislation and regulation to support this aim.
