Life at Deloitte
Audit manager, Iron Man champ
Senior audit manager and accomplished triathlete, Toinette van Niekerk, discusses her passion for her work and her sport.
What I love most about working at Deloitte in audit is that each day is different.
One day I might spend time “on the ground” coaching the audit team, the next engaging with the C-suite of a listed entity.
I also get to work across different industries ranging from manufacturing and temporary employment services, to property investment companies.
People think that being an auditor is about crunching numbers, but people skills are important too. On average, I spend about 70% of my time engaging with people and 30% looking at numbers.
My other passion? Triathlon! I fell in love with the sport after completing my first “sprint triathlon” in January 2017, consisting of a 600m swim, 20km bike, and 5km run.
After that, I signed up with a coach and set my sights higher: completing my first full Iron Man in 2019, and qualifying to compete at the 70.3 Half Ironman World Championship in France in September 2019.
Wold championships was extremely tough, but the course was beautiful – it even included a portion of the Tour de France. I managed to place 60th of 250 in my age group, 200th out of 2000 women and 4th South African women overall, which I was very pleased with. I missed the South African crowds though - they have the best “gees”!
I wouldn’t have gotten this far without my coach, Francesco Del Castello from Triathlon Training Results (“TTR”) - believing in me, backing me, supporting me and pushing me to limits I only dreamt. I have to thank Deloitte for the support, and for assisting me in getting here – a special thank you to Andre Dennis (Audit Partner) for being the driver behind it all.
Being a professional and racing competitively can definitely be challenging, but I firmly believe that “if it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you.” Don’t be scared to be brave and set goals for yourself!
