Deloitte’s sports industry starting line-up

Trends expected to disrupt and dominate in 2017

The sports media landscape is evolving rapidly, mainly in terms of who creates content and who has the right to distribute it. This report looks at media trends that will impact the industry in 2017.

Deloitte’s sports practice began looking ahead to the issues and opportunities likely to be top of mind for sports executives this year.

One trend in particular we expect to see grow in 2017 is the number of nontraditional media companies aggressively pursuing sports rights. Unique content will likely be a key differentiator between companies as they seek growth opportunities.

Teams also continue to search for ways to optimize fan experience beyond the stadium walls. Teams for years have been looking for ways to “innovate,” yet often have had a hard time defining what innovation means to them. One trend that cannot be ignored is technology and how teams engange with their fans. Creating an experience for the fans whether they are at the stadium or watching form the comfort of their own homes. Teams and leagues have generally sought to increase the overall technical know-how of their organisation so that all areas of the business are more conversant in the power of data.
