Making an impact that matters

Deloitte partners with 4IRSA

In the first quarter of 2018, the South African economy declined by 2% which was notably the worst decline in almost a decade. There was a public call to action by Telkom’s CEO, Mr Sipho Maseko challenging various stakeholders in academia, government and private sector to unlock value and set the country on a trajectory to contribute to the fourth industrial revolution (4IR).

Resulting from this, 4IRSA was formed, a partnership between Telkom and the Universities of Witwatersrand, Fort Hare and Johannesburg with Deloitte as a knowledge partner; a partnership that seeks to stimulate and facilitate an inclusive national dialogue.

This is to shape a logical national response to the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) in South Africa. It also aims to complement and support other national activities relating to 4IR, most notably the Presidential Commission on 4IR. The 4IRSA partnership was recently launched by Minister of Communication, Stella Ndabeni-Abraham who unveiled plans towards the Digital Economy Summit expected to take place on 5 - 6 July 2019 as well as the Presidential Commission on 4IR. During this launch a report detailing the outcomes of the sectorial workshops run by the Deloitte team was handed over to the minister.

Key Takeouts:

The report covers summaries of the the following sector workshops held leading up to the 4IRSA launch:

  • Public Sector
  • ICT Sector
  • Agriculture, Food Stuffs and related Retail Services Sector
  • Heavy Industry, Mining, Infrastructure and Manufacturing Sector
  • Business and Financial Services Sector
