Tip-offs hotlines are the most common detection method in organisations

ACFE Sub-Saharan Africa Report to the Nations 2016

The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners acknowledges that the way in which fraud affects organisations can vary in different geographic areas. The ACFE has since supplemented its 2016 Global Report to the Nations with a regional report focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Sub-Saharan report highlights the relative high risk of corruption in the region, with 48% of the 285 cases analysed relate to corruption. It also found that schemes could continue for 12 months before being detected, emphasising the importance for organisations to pro-actively manage their fraud risks to ensure prevention and early detection of fraud.

As in the case of the global trends, the regional study again confirmed that tip-offs hotlines were the most common detection method and identified more than 37% of cases. The impact of hotlines was also highlighted: those organisations with hotlines detected almost half of all incidents through their hotlines, compared to only 24% of cases at organisations without a hotline.
