The importance of pro bono

Alex Haseley, a military veteran and senior manager in the Risk and Financial Advisory practice of Deloitte & Touche LLP, knows the importance of pro bono work. He enjoys using his professional skills to help people while creating an impact on his community.

It’s very rewarding to do this kind of work, and it makes everything else that I do at Deloitte and even in my community all that more worthwhile and rewarding. Deloitte gives me the opportunity to do things I’m passionate about.

Not only is pro bono good for the community, but it can also benefit professionals who participate in these types of engagements.

Networking and collaboration

Doing pro bono work gives you the opportunity to work with a diverse group of people, with a diverse set of skills, all working toward a common goal. During one of Alex’s pro bono engagements, he collaborated with a nonprofit organization focused on providing disaster relief and recovery services to those impacted by natural disasters. Alex also had the opportunity to work with four colleagues from across the country, all with varying industry backgrounds. Teamwork and collaboration played a central role in making this engagement a success.

Learning and growth

Working on a pro bono project can help you to develop subject matter knowledge and can strengthen your professional skills. At Deloitte, 60 percent of professionals reported significant gains in job-relevant skills, while 83 percent said their pro bono experience made a positive impact on their overall job satisfaction.

Making an impact

Collaborating with nonprofits is a way to give back to the community in a meaningful way. As a former veteran, Alex knows what it means to give back to his country and community. During a pro bono engagement, he was able to work with other veterans and help disaster victims rebuild their lives. “We not only had the opportunity to help clients, but we had the opportunity to help clients that were helping Americans,” says Alex. “The real long-term impact is in their recovery.”

Deloitte encourages professionals to create social impact and business value by using their knowledge and skills to help mission-driven organizations reach more people while assisting them in their efforts to achieve improved operational efficiency.
