Nearly 300 students from 64 top-tier universities in the region participated in this year's Deloitte Tax Championship, a renowned competition for tertiary institutions with the objective to promote tax education and academic exchange in Greater China. The regional competitions, which finished on Aug 30 in Beijing, Dalian, Shanghai, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Taipei, comprised a problem solving session of simulated business cases and an intense quiz on tax regulations and practice knowledge. The final competition will be held in Shanghai on October 25, 2014.
"We always support learning and skills building for our community as an integral component of our corporate social responsibility commitment. Over the years, we have seen the growing importance of tax as a key factor for business decision. As such, we continue to organize the Deloitte Tax Championship competition, which enables the knowledge sharing among students, teachers, tax professionals and government officials for shaping the future tax curriculum," said Vivian Jiang, Country Tax Leader, Deloitte China.
Similar to last year, the Deloitte Tax Championship also includes an essay writing competition for post-graduate students on key tax topics, such as transfer pricing, value-added tax and international tax agreement and information exchange. Shortlisted students will be invited to deliver a presentation to a panel of judges at the national final competition in Shanghai.
Maria Liang, Chairlady of the Deloitte Tax Championship said,"We were inspired by the performance of students at the regional competitions, in which they demonstrated not only their tax knowledge, but also communication skills and team spirit when competing with other counterparts. Today's business world emphasizes the importance of innovation and out-of-the-box thinking. The Deloitte Tax Championship provides a platform for students to leave their classrooms and apply their text-book knowledge to resolve simulated business cases."
Launched in 2004, the Deloitte Tax Championship is a pivotal initiative of the Deloitte Tax Research Foundation, which promotes education, research and innovation in the field of taxation by supporting an array of national and local programs in the region.
