Introducing the high-performance, high-octane GES team
Ang Weina
GES Leader
Ang Weina, Global Employer Services (GES) Leader has been with Deloitte Malaysia for 28 years. Starting her career in 1990 at Deloitte Singapore, alongside with a secondment to Deloitte Japan, Weina subsequently moved to Malaysia, working her way up with passion and dedication to become the partner responsible for the development of the GES business, together with her capable GES team.
She reveals, “I always challenge the young ones. I don’t want to work with the same method used 10 or 20 years ago even though we will come out with the same output. For example, the rule of tax return is still the same, but how we approach the tax return filing can be different. It is about how you think it evolves.” Weina’s team assists in bringing talent into the country or sending them abroad, helping corporate clients with their mobility policies for their international employees, global compliance, efficient remuneration planning as well as global workforce management, e.g., legal, compensation policy, on-boarding, tax regulatory matters.
As a progressive practice that thrives on flexible, innovative work arrangements to optimise productivity, the GES team was one of the first to have gone paperless and adopted the flexibility of being able to work from home, as access to documents is easy and convenient even if they are off-site so long as they have their note book and internet connection. “We work really hard on technology so that our clients can access the platform 24/7, to check their status of immigration, payroll, etc. High accessibility is definitely a global advantage we provide that our clients value,” says Weina. Weina shares, “Over the last two decades, clients’ demands have changed because the economy is growing, so we have to learn to adapt to them as well. The challenging part is how to get accepted.” She also advises those who are new to the workforce to be patient and learn. “Don’t be anxious. Get your foundation right. Get it right in the first two years; it may be painful and long, but little by little you will grow for the better definitely.”
An athletic person, Weina keeps herself fit and healthy in her free time by taking to the outdoors. "Apart from work, I also enjoy going for outdoor activities, including running, golf and swimming. In fact, 2 years ago, I completed the Fujisan Marathon, a 42.195km circuit course in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. I have been running half marathons and doing a full marathon was a dream, although scary. And since that year coincided with my zodiac year, I thought why not - just do it to fulfil my dream. I was glad I did!"
We asked Weina what her most important piece of advice to young professionals is. She says, "Time will just pass by and before you know it, one year is already gone. My journey with Deloitte for the past 28 years has been great – and it does not stop now. My advice for newcomers is to do one thing memorable every year whilst you are still young or look back on each year and count the new things you have learnt over the year or are doing in the new year. If nothing has changed, you need to start to change."

Heng Huichuin
GES Tax Assistant
In GES, Tax Assistant Heng Huichuin is also part of the Talent and HR pillar in his team in addition to his core work.
“It’s important that newcomers to the department are made to feel welcome and supported as they familiarise themselves with the environment and work culture,” Heng explains. “My role includes providing training and activities to enhance our team spirit and guide our new colleagues in settling into their jobs comfortably,” he adds.
For Heng, working in Deloitte has strengthened his communication skills and this has helped him ace through building rapport and strong relationships with his clients. Strong communication skills have also helped tremendously in his tax advisory work especially in conducting tax briefings. In GES, communication is vital and having clear, transparent interaction sets the right tone for work expectations. It inculcates accountability in the team members for their own progress and creates a safe environment for constructive feedback. “I have also learned to take on work challenges with high responsibility and manage my time better.”
Outside of work, Heng is a Futsal enthusiast and was part of the team representing Deloitte in the Inter-Accounting Firm Games (IAFG) 2017 where they won the finals in Futsal, sweeping the champion’s title!
Heng shares that there are two important reasons why futsal is such a great fit with his work life. The first is teamwork. Futsal is a team sport. Being individualistic will not help in defeating the opponents. A team player who understands the capability of each teammates will help in improving the chemistry as well as to defeat the opponent. The same applies to life at work. Being receptive and accommodating each other’s capabilities and flaws will lead to better understanding and efficiency. Secondly, leadership – charisma is very important in leading a team. Connection with the team such as acknowledging their achievements and giving encouragement to keep trying differentiates a good team leader from a bad one. Heng says, "As they say, if we win, we win together. Even at the workplace, employees tend to be more motivated to work for a leader when they feel appreciated."
Heng's advice for a healthier work life balance is this: "I would say that it's always important to find time to do what you love at least once a week. If there is a time set aside for your interest or hobby, you will be motivated to plan ahead and to get your job done in time.

Sofiah Shuhada
GES Business Support Consultant
Sofiah mentioned that working in Deloitte has provided her a platform to connect with various people from diverse backgrounds and widen her views, as the GES team works with colleagues from other offices, clients from different industries and local government regulatory bodies. According to Sofiah, the exposure that she has gained so far is one of the most valuable assets of working in GES. “In order to master the communication and problem solving skills, one must be hands-on. The more effort you put in, the more you gain,” she enthuses. Sofiah believes that in a high-performance team, everyone must consistently perform well and work as one in order to ensure the projects are done well. “I am grateful to have team members who I can work and play with and I am gradually increasing my competencies by learning from mistakes made,” says Sofiah with a smile.
An outgoing person, Sofiah finds travelling the best way for her to unwind outside of work. "One of the things I enjoy doing away from work is to travel to exotic places! I consider myself lucky to be living in Asia, a region so wonderfully colourful, rich in culture, steeped in traditions and filled with abundant fauna and flora. Some of my more exciting Asian adventures included getting up close and personal with a tiger in Thailand and cliff-climbing in Bali."
“Travelling helps me to de-stress and widens my perspective in life. I also enjoy exploring various cultures and meeting new people in different countries when I go on my travel adventures. There’s this popular quote that I really like: 'Life is a journey, not a destination.' I will continue to make the most out of this journey!” Sofiah enthuses.

Darmesh Thangesvaran
GES Tax Intern
“If your perception of an internship is lots of photocopying and endless rounds of making coffee for your bosses, then you are definitely underestimating the role.” Darmesh Thangesvaran, an intern with the GES team, finds his assignment at Deloitte a highly valuable experience because he is given the opportunity to participate in many aspects of the team’s operations, such as managing tax communication, briefing clients in tax compliance, and working on related tax documents. Although an internship period is short, there are no limits to what you can learn if you set a focus and goal to it. As a keen learner, Darmesh’s exposure during his job stint is not confined to Malaysia’s taxes; he is also able to see what Malaysian taxes mean in a global context and understand the interrelations at play.
“Being in GES provides me with a global perspective. The most interesting part of the job is the opportunity to work with people from different countries,” he says. However, the most challenging part of the work is to multi-task. Darmesh claims that time management and being able to prioritise different tasks effectively is the key to success to GES." Darmesh is glad to be a part of the big, happy GES family. “The healthy working environment keeps me motivated and constantly pushes me to achieve more.”
A self-confessed adventure-junkie, Darmesh says, “My adventurous streak comes from my parents who were very active when they were younger. I take my weekends off work seriously to spend time with family and friends in activities such as jungle trekking, abseiling, water-rafting and anything fun that involves water! I'm also active in hockey. Being an adventure-junkie can be dangerous, but it’s the thrill that keeps me going for more. I am planning to trek the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal and also intend to visit Kho Phangan in Thailand and Adelaide soon."
