Tax Audit and Investigation Workshop Series – Chapter 1: Tackling tax audits and investigations confidently – 13 March 2018
The Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia ("IRBM") has been increasingly active in conducting tax audits and investigations, subjecting companies to detailed scrutiny. In light of this, Deloitte Malaysia kicked off an intensive half-day workshop series designed to give participants an understanding of the key action points and approach in handling the IRBM and tackling a tax audit or investigation with confidence. On 13 March, a workshop on Chapter 1 of the series was conducted to a sizeable 100-strong audience.
The session provided updates on the salient changes of the Tax Audit Framework 2017 and touched on the strategies as well as common mistakes and misconceptions in handling tax audits and investigation, among others. The highlight of the program was the forum segment in which Puan Hazlina Binti Hussain, Director of the Dispute Resolution and Board Secretariat Department at the IRBM shed light on the IRBM’s activities and gave advice to the participants for better compliance.

On 13 March, Deloitte Chinese Services Group presented a complimentary intensive half-day workshop on corporate tax compliance and audit issues to more than a hundred participants. This bilingual session was timely as the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (“IRBM”) has been steadily increasing the level of awareness and boosting compliance rate among taxpayers. In addition, they are also addressing tax evasion loopholes by way of auditing books and records prepared by taxpayers.
Therefore, it was essential for companies to have a good understanding of the IRBM’s expectation towards the taxpayer’s preparation for a tax audit or investigation. With important topics such as the IRBM’s strategy, documentation preparation by the taxpayer and the tax appeal process being covered, as well as pertinent issues being discussed during the Q&A session, participants were able to gain valuable corporate tax compliance insights from the workshop.

(Penang) Industry 4.0: Future of manufacturing – 28 February 2018
To shed light on pertinent Industry 4.0 issues, Deloitte Malaysia hosted a complimentary half-day seminar themed “Industry 4.0: Future of manufacturing – Let your business benefit from the technology revolution” which was attended by more than 100 participants.
Deloitte robot DX2 gave an innovative opening to the seminar, followed by insights by Samuel Cammiss, Director at Deloitte Southeast Asia Innovation and Habib Ab Mukmin, Manager at Deloitte Southeast Asia Innovation on the impacts and benefits of Industry 4.0 on the manufacturing industry. Guest speaker Zabidi Mahbar, Executive Director, Strategic Planning (Manufacturing) of Malaysia Investment Development Authority (MIDA) spoke on the government’s initiatives and support in promoting Industry 4.0. Last but not least, Tham Lih Jiun, Real Estate Tax Leader shared her experience on how the transformation to Industry 4.0 is being incentivised and shared some case studies with the participants.

Transfer Pricing: New Requirement Reporting Seminar - 24 August 2017
On 24 August 2017, Deloitte’s Transfer Pricing Services Group organised two sessions of the New Requirement Reporting Seminar to share insights on recently released revisions to the Malaysian Transfer Pricing Guidelines 2012 (“MTPG”).
The seminar featured Malaysian Inland Revenue Board guest speakers Director Wan Ramiza Wan Ghazali and Principal Assistant Director Amir Zainuddin Abdul Hamid, who provided their perspective on all key changes and expectations of the taxpayers during transfer pricing audits.
Deloitte speakers National Transfer Pricing Leader Theresa Goh, Transfer Pricing Partner Subhabrata Dasgupta, International Tax Leader Tan Hooi Beng and Transfer Pricing Director Gagan Deep Nagpal shared their views on the new changes in compliance requirements and contents of transfer pricing documentation, provided guidance on the Arm’s Length Principle and gave a recap of the recent change in the Malaysian Withholding Tax regime.

GST Essentials Training Workshop (KL) - 19 June 2017
Our GST Team developed a one-day training workshop on 19 June 2017 to allow companies to better understand the Malaysian GST Essentials. The workshop, which included a one-hour clinic session with our GST specialists, was attended by 30 finance professionals from various industries.
During the event, Deloitte Malaysia’s GST & Customs Director, Wong Poh Geng and GST Associate Director, Irene Lee discussed essential issues such as accounting for GST on transactions commonly overlooked, claiming of input tax credits, GST documentation including price display, filling of GST returns, tax coding and tips on compliance.

Other team members from Deloitte who also played a vital role in making the program a success are Sim Kwang Gek, Mergers & Acquisitions Leader, Carol Eng, Michelle Lai, Joseph Teoh, Wong Yu Sann, Diamond Khanted, Tan Chia Woon, Owen Wong, Wendy Grace Wong, Tem Kok Seong, Thean Wei Nie, Jean Ee, Serene Liew and Jeremy Toh. The program covers seven aspiring ACCA students selected from TARUC who go through a four-month internship with Deloitte that provides intensive academic guidance covering the fundamental and technical areas of Malaysian Taxation, in order to become the ACCA P6 World Prize Winner.
