Team Singapore sailor awarded the Deloitte Singapore Scholarship to train for Asian Games 2018
SINGAPORE, 3 January 2018 — Team Singapore sailor Amanda Ng (23 years old) has been awarded a Deloitte Singapore Scholarship specifically to help support her Asian Games 2018 goal while she pursues her undergraduate degree in accountancy at the Singapore Management University (SMU). This is the first time the Deloitte Scholarship has been awarded for this purpose.
The scholarship, valued at SG$20,000, was awarded in December 2017 and Amanda is able to use this amount to fund all aspects of her training, preparation and equipment needed for her to qualify for the Asian Games in Jakarta this year. Amanda made her major Games debut for sailing in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
When she graduates from SMU, Amanda will join Deloitte as an Audit & Assurance Associate under Deloitte Ignite – a special programme for elite athletes that offers flexible employment in order for these athletes to pursue both their careers and sports with equal dedication and commitment. The more than 40 current and retired Team Singapore athletes presently employed by Deloitte Singapore include netballers Charmaine Soh and Kimberly Lim, pole vaulter Rachel Yang and retired badminton player Derek Wong.
“Our support for athletes like Amanda is guided by Deloitte’s shared purpose of making an impact that matters, and our commitment to help athletes develop their careers by providing them an environment where they can balance their work and sport without compromise, and for them to look ahead and plan a future after sports. We hope that with this scholarship, Amanda and future athletes who become Deloitte scholars, will be financially worry-free and be able to dedicate their time to excel in their sports and studies, and subsequently in their careers, in equal measure,” said Seah Gek Choo, Talent Partner, Deloitte Singapore.
“Having hired over 70 athletes through Deloitte Ignite since 2014 – current and retired – we have observed that high performing athletes, like Amanda, are capable of also delivering high level work performance. They tend to possess certain attributes, often heightened, that we value in our people – ambition, drive and relentless focus. Additionally, we advocate employee diversity; having national athletes as employees adds another facet to our already diverse talent pool and our people can benefit from working together and sharing different unique skills, mindsets and experiences with one another.”
“I am grateful to Deloitte for the scholarship and proud to be the first recipient of the Deloitte Scholarship for elite athletes. As a full time undergraduate pursuing competitive sailing, every means of support, financial or otherwise, counts. This scholarship will help lighten the financial weight, which in turn frees me to focus on both my studies and sailing with peace of mind. Beyond the financial benefit, Deloitte’s commitment of supporting professional athletes in both sports and career means that I can continue to pursue my sporting passion even as I strive to excel professionally in Deloitte. I look forward to starting my career at Deloitte,” said Amanda Ng, Deloitte Singapore Scholar and Team Singapore sailor.
Prior to receiving the Deloitte scholarship, Amanda was an intern with Deloitte Singapore as part of the organisation’s Summer 2017 intake. She exhibited an exemplary work attitude, and together with her good grades and her active involvement in her sport, she was given a priority offer to join Deloitte Singapore after she graduates and put her in good stead for the scholarship. Amanda is currently also a Deloitte Student Ambassador at SMU where she acts as liaison between her peers and Deloitte.
