Global impact. Challenging projects.

Challenging, complex legal work that requires deep, technical knowledge was what Miguel Ángel Barroso López was looking for in a career when he was at university. That’s why, seven years ago, he joined Deloitte Legal, Spain right after completing his degree. He is now a senior associate in the Public Sector, Infrastructures and Regulated Sectors practice. “Among other things, I provide legal advisory services to public and private sector clients on a wide variety of energy and environmental issues. I also act as a trial lawyer at all the levels of the court.” says Miguel. “From my first day, I have been working on complex, large scale global projects for the most important players in the energy industry—and that’s incredible.”

Energy is a technical and ever-changing industry with global economic, environmental, and political impact. Lawyers need to be legal and industry specialists while also being flexible enough to handle new challenges every day, and Miguel likes that. “Recently, I gave legal advice on how the Spanish Natural Electricity Trading market functions. At the same time, I was participating in the acquisition of a gas production plant,” says Miguel. “Both projects are for the energy sector, but one is in the electricity market and one is in the gas market. Clients need us to be specialists in every area of energy law.”

Making an impact that matters is Deloitte’s purpose, and Miguel and his colleagues across Deloitte Legal work every day to challenge themselves to do what matters most—for clients, for people, and for society. “Recently, we discovered the law that regulates the services that one of our clients provides is scheduled to be amended by the government. The client didn’t know that change was coming,” says Miguel. “Because my team and I stay updated on the industry and anticipate changes, we explained the upcoming modification.” This had a positive impact on the client. “Clients are surprised and excited when we present solutions because they see that we feel the same about their business as they do.”

As a manager, Miguel works to make a positive impact for his team and to motivate them to deliver their best— helping them serve clients distinctively, bringing innovative insights, and solving complex challenges. “I have a job that allows me to learn as much as I can,” says Miguel. “Deloitte Legal provides great opportunities to learn, meet people, and become an excellent lawyer—on the job, at Deloitte University, and through specialized learning programs like the Deloitte Legal Academy and Global Deloitte Legal Conferences.”

Entrepreneurs are welcome. Talented professionals are inspired to deliver outstanding value to clients, and are provided an exceptional career experience with an inclusive and collaborative culture. “In my role, I work on all phases of a project, manage a team, calculate fees, and work closely with the client. It’s like managing my own company,” concludes Miguel. “Deloitte Legal has the global network, the connection to the other Deloitte businesses, and a technology-enabled approach to law that is focused on the future. It’s a huge enterprise where hard work is valued, and I see that I have a future here.”
