Ray Morris – A rewarding career in Tax

After joining through our Graduate Scheme, Ray’s revelling in the variety of challenges he faces as a Tax Analyst in our Reading-based Reward Team.

Tell us about your role at Deloitte, what’s a typical day like for you?

I joined as a graduate and was attracted to Deloitte because I knew I'd get exposure to a real variety of work.

I advise companies on tax issues relating to employee pay and reward schemes. This broadly encompasses employment tax advice, share schemes and executive compensation.

What was your most memorable moment on the job so far?

I’ve done lots of work that I’m proud of, it’s hard to choose just one thing. Currently I’m just one exam away from completing my ATT qualification, and then I’ll likely be moving onto the CTA qualification, which is very exciting.

What’s the best part of your job and in what ways is your team innovative?

I love the variety. It’s a cliché but no two days are ever the same.

For example, the upcoming changes to the Off-Payroll worker rules are a big challenge. We have to really think about how we can best support our clients and tailor a new approach to their business. The learning curve in tax is incredibly steep. However, people are always happy to explain things and help you develop, while still being great fun to work with. It’s part of why I like the Reading office. It’s big enough to get exposure to a wide variety of work, but small enough to build strong relationships. We’re always encouraged to think about better ways of doing things, and where we do have an idea we're encouraged to share it.

Why would you recommend Deloitte to someone?

The hierarchy here is horizontal. It feels like I work alongside a variety of senior colleagues on different projects. I thought it would be very corporate but it’s a relaxed atmosphere where everybody works hard and supports each other.

Deloitte also has a strong sense of meritocracy and support, and continual professional development is encouraged. Our inclusive workforce also encompasses all ethnicities and ages, which puts us in a good position to serve our clients, who are very diverse themselves.

In my spare time, I play football with colleagues and I’m a keen traveler. Working abroad is something I’ll definitely consider doing once I become more senior in the firm.
