Life in the modern world is both complex and connected. The way we bank, shop and interact with each other is increasingly influenced by our phones and a growing number of smart devices. However, with so many devices at hand, our spending habits are changing.
Laptop and tablet adoption has hit a plateau. Smartphone penetration has been increasing in the last four years but will likely plateau as well. In 2019, smartphone penetration is at 88 percent.
The smartphone base is aging. Every year, the percentage of smartphones acquired in the last 18 months has fallen. This does not seem to impact the secondary market, as the percentage of phones that are sold/traded remains fairly stable.

With an average of 5.8 devices, Belgians own multiple accessories for multiple environments.

Wearables are on the rise
Wearables show the highest growth. In 2019, wearable ownership is at 22 percent.

Content is king
Belgians’ favourite smartphone activities are reading the news, watching videos and shopping.

Mobile gaming is getting mainstream
Half of all smartphone owners play games on their smartphone, 30 percent while commuting.
