Annual review of football finance 2019

World in motion

The 28th edition of the report shows the continued revenue growth of the English Football’s Premier League and Football League and their record contribution to the European football market in the 2017/18 season.

The latest issue of the "Annual review of football finance" study points out that even though Germany's Bundesliga has managed to narrow the gap, the Premier League remains comfortably ranked as the largest revenue generating in the world.

The 2018 Russian World Cup, as well as revenue growth in all five major European leagues boosted the total revenue. While Spain and Germany run for second place in contribution, France's national league was unable to its replicate success at the World Cup, with revenue growth limited by increased wages. On the other hand, the Italian league fared slightly better than its national team in the World Cup and achieved consistent revenue growth.

As UEFA has stated its ambition to preserve and improve competitive balance in football, some changes in club regulations can be expected. The coming months promise important debates and decisions with potentially profound impacts on the game and off the pitch.
