A recap of Deloitte Tax Championship 2016

Case Study Competition

Deloitte Tax Championship 2016 came to a successful conclusion in Guangzhou on 30th October. This year’s competition attracted participation from 64 universities in 31 cities of the Greater China Region. Below is the list of the participating teams (listed in alphabetical order):

Group competitions were held in Beijing, Dalian, Shanghai, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Taipei simultaneously on August 27th 2016. Participating teams were divided into five groups. Teams from the Mainland China were divided into 3 Groups by a draw one day before the competition day. Teams from the Hong Kong SAR and the Macau SAR were in Group 4, and teams from Taiwan were in Group 5. Incorporated the concept of "Internet+", online platform was used for the group competitions. On the group competition day, each team submitted a summary of their solutions for a simulation business case online in the morning and took an online quiz contest in the afternoon. 13 finalist teams entered the national competition, including 9 from the Mainland China and 4 from the Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and Taiwan.

The national competition was held in Guangzhou from October 29th to October 30th 2016. 13 finalist teams were invited to a welcome dinner where they met tax professionals from Deloitte China offices on the eve of October 29th. Each team then went through the challenge of a simulation business case in the morning of October 29th, followed by an oral presentation in the afternoon. They presented their solutions and answered questions from their respective judge panel. The judge panels then decided the top 3 finalists, 3 outstanding awards and 7 merit awards teams according to their performances. In the morning of October 30th, the top 3 finalists competed against each other again in an extra round of competition to decide the Champion, second place and third place.

In the following championship award luncheon ceremony of Oct.30th, Ms. Vivian Jiang, Deputy CEO of Deloitte China and Managing Partner of Tax and Business Advisory Services for the Greater China Region spoke with the students, teachers and guests on tax affairs and economics, as well as the China's integration into the global ecocnomy. She said "Tax praticitioners should 'think out of the box' and understand the economic substances of tax. The Tax Championship has vividly proved that point. Deloitte is committed to developing international professionals with the '3i' attributes – providing insightful solutions, adopting an integrated approach and offering innovative ideas. "

Mr. Zhang Zhiyong, former SAT Administrator, CITRI Deputy Director and expert in international financial organizations was invited to be the expert judge of the Deloitte Tax Championship. Mr. Zhang recognized the efforts of Deloitte in developing tax education and driving the industrial development. He hopes that Deloitte will continue to make an impact as a global professional service provider.

The top honor of the 2016 competition went to Southwestern University of Finance & Economics. The first runner-up was Shanghai University of Finance & Economics and the second runner-up was Sun Yat-sen University. The outstanding teams were Zhongnan University of Economics & Law, Jiangxi University of Finance & Economics, and National Taiwan University. The merit teams were Guangdong University of Finance & Economics, Renmin University of China, Jilin University of Finance and Economics, Huazhong University of Science & Technology, Lingnan University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and National Chengchi University.

Essay Competition

Students were also invited to an essay competition in Chinese on PRC tax hot topics. Out of 27 essays received from students of full-time Master or PhD programs, 8 were shortlisted. During the 2016 championship national competition, writers of the 8 shortlisted essays also gathered in Guangzhou on October 29th, 2016 to present their essays before a panel of judges. The judge panel then decided the top 3 winners according to their performance. Winners of the Best Paper Awards (not in order of ranking) were:
