A recap of Deloitte Tax Championship 2018
Deloitte Tax Championship 2018 came to a successful conclusion in the Grand Harbour Kowloon on 11th November. This year’s competition invited 71 universities in 32 cities of Great China Region and finally 56 universities joined the competition after successfully forming teams. The competition was divided into two phases: Phase I Regional competition and Phase II National competition. Phase I Regional competition was an online contest in multiple-choice format, focusing on PRC tax and relevant regulations, as well as testing students' English proficiency and logic capacity. Phase II National competition was live competition in case analysis format, to test the students' multi-disciplinary knowledge, understanding of cutting-edge technologies, and capabilities to apply what's learnt in practical problem-solving.
A total of 13 finalists including 9 highest-scoring teams from Mainland China, 2 top teams from Hong Kong S.A.R. and Macau S.A.R., and 2 top teams from Taiwan during the Phase I Regional Competition qualified for the Phase II National Competition.
The national competition was held in Hong Kong from 10th November to 11th November. In the evening of 9th November, 13 finalist teams were invited to a welcome dinner where they met tax professionals from Deloitte HK offices .On 10th November, Saturday of the semi-final competition, the 13 finalists went through the challenge of a simulated business case followed by a presentation in front of a panel of judges. The judges then ranked these teams according to their performances. On 11th November, Sunday of the final competition, the top 3 finalists underwent another round of presentation for a new simulated business case to decide the champion, 1st runner up, and 2nd runner up teams.
In the following championship award luncheon ceremony of November 11th, Deloitte China Tax Management National Partner Ms Eunice Kuo shared her insights with students and teachers on how intelligent innovation can help local businesses benefit amid even the most drastic changes in tax policy. Eunice said, "The Belt and Road Initiative and the Greater Bay Area present a vast array of opportunities. Alongside recently enhanced super tax deduction policies for cross-border contract R&D expenses and further deductions for small and medium-sized tech companies, they create optimal conditions for foreign investors, especially in the context of technology development. In response, we at Deloitte strive to empower our clients with integrated digital solutions across a wide range of business functions. We make nurturing tax talent a top priority by incorporating expert knowledge and advanced technology in our educational experience, so we can better prepare them to thrive in the digital present and future."
The top honor of the 2018 Deloitte Tax Championship went to National Chengchi University. The first runner-up was University of International Business & Economics and the second runner-up was Central University of Finance & Economics. The outstanding teams were Southwestern University of Finance & Economics, The University of Hong Kong, and Macau University of Science & Technology. The merit teams were Shandong University, Tianjin University of Commerce, Chun Yuan Christian University, Soochow University, Hebei University of Economics and Business, Nanjing Audit University, and Hunan University.
