Italian Companies and Competitiveness in Green Technologies

Enabling factors and barriers to the development of industrial policy in the green technology supply chain

The "Italian Companies and Competitiveness in Green Technologies" Survey, conducted by Confindustria and Deloitte on a sample of 30 leading companies in the sector and members of the Federations Elettricità Futura, Anie, and Anima, was presented by Angelo Era - Energy, Resources & Industrial Leader, Deloitte Central Mediterranean, on March 20 as part of the third edition of Sustainability Week organized in Treviso by Confindustria Veneto Est.

The primary objective of the Report is to share the sector's companies' perspective on the possibility of localizing - or in some cases relocating - the value chain of renewable technologies in Italy. This possibility, in line with the “Net Zero Industry Act” recently enacted by the European Commission, would not only help reduce our Country's dependence on non-European suppliers in a strategically important sector such as energy, but would also have a significant impact on the growth of the Italian manufacturing sector, both directly, by growing the green energy sector, and indirectly, by developing the infrastructures and a competitive and reliable offering for one of the most important production factors for the Country's industrial development, such as energy. The main purpose of the survey is, therefore, to draw the attention of Institutions on the main operators’ positioning in the various industrial sectors of renewable energy supply chains, reporting their demands and proposals.

The report was previewed on October 23, 2023, during the event promoted by Confindustria and Deloitte titled "Competitiveness in Green Technologies - A New Industrial Policy for Italian Companies", held at Confindustria's headquarters in Rome. About the event

On October 23rd the Report "Competitiveness in green technologies | A new industrial policy for Italian companies", promoted by Deloitte and Confindustria, was presented during an event at Confindustria headquarters, in Rome. The initiative involved leading companies in the Italian energy scenario that contributed with their testimonies to define possible industrial policy interventions for increasing key technologies’ production to achieve the energy transition and the decarbonization, as established by the European Union.

The event represented a high-profile forum regarding issues related to the transformation of renewable energy production, distribution and storage models in order to identify solutions for mitigating the vulnerabilities of our energy system.
The current tension on the global energy and raw materials markets, further exacerbated by the Ukrainian crisis, has highlighted the structural criticalities of the Italian and European energy model, strongly dependent on supplies from Countries outside the European Union, also due to the delocalization of components of the 'green' technological and production chains.

Illustrious protagonists from the institutions and business word took part in the conference as speakers, such as:

  • Gilberto Pichetto Fratin – Italian Minister of the Environment and Energy Security
  • Fausta Bergamotto – MIMIT Undersecretary
  • Aurelio Regina – President of the Energy Technical Group, Confindustria
  • Fabio Pompei – CEO, Deloitte Central Mediterranean
  • Massimo Beccarello – Senior Advisor for the Energy Transition, Confindustria
  • Angelo Era – Energy, Resources & Industrial Leader, Deloitte Central Mediterranean
  • Giulio Iucci – Vice President of ANIE Federation
  • Agostino Re Rebaudengo – President of Elettricità Futura
  • Letizia Magaldi – Executive Vice President, Magaldi Green Energy
  • Eliano Russo – CEO 3Sun.
