Why a business case is critical to shaping technology driven transformations

How to translate overall vision into a robust and meaningful case

At Deloitte we are often asked for advice on how to make well-informed investment decisions in environments characterised by uncertainty. All too often this arises when an organisation cannot put off an upgrade or replacement any longer – as the cost and risk of doing so is too high. In this point of view we explore the ways in which a measured and rigorously tested business case can be used to evaluate and further define alternative system solution options, while also helping to shape and transform the design of future organisation.

Some of our recommendations relate to highlighting

  • The importance of a robust financial baseline: to pinpoint the most addressable revenue and cost categories
  • Clearly stating (and testing) underlying benefit and cost drivers: linked to scope of planned system solution and functional / business area specific impacts
  • Appropriately prioritising in line with anticipated business impact and complexity to implement: particularly crucial when considering trade-offs (including whether to adapt or adopt proposed system vendor solution)
  • Accounting for high and low scenario outcomes: to calibrate and confirm target return, payback period and risks
