One major lesson that sports has taught me is that it is never too late to try something new. I picked up badminton late in life, driven by the simple thought that badminton is likely a sport I can do well in even with Erb’s Palsy, a condition which limits the movement of my right arm (I play left-handed). I did not expect that one day, I will be representing Singapore in major competitions and games!

December is the time of year for celebrations, and today, Singapore is all set to celebrate the extraordinary with the opening of the ASEAN Para Games. I penned a similar blog entry back in June this year for the SEA Games, and from then till now, Deloitte’s focus has been unwavering – to Deliver the Dream and make an impact that matters to one and all in our community.

Three Saturdays ago, I made my way down to Marina Bay Sands – not for a simple weekend outing, but to be part of something extraordinary. I was just one among thousands of Singaporeans who were there to lend their support to the 8th ASEAN Para Games and our Team Singapore para athletes.

I have been swimming competitively for 11 years now but I have never, in these 11 years, competed in a major games in Singapore. This year, the opportunity that I have been eagerly waiting for is here! With the 8th ASEAN Para Games round the corner, I will finally have the chance to experience the excitement and adrenalin of competing in front of the home crowd.

In about a month’s time, Singapore will welcome another large contingent of athletes from around the region, this time for the 8th ASEAN Para Games. This is the first time that the ASEAN Para Games has been held in Singapore, and with its message of community and friendship, it will be a fitting conclusion to Singapore’s year-long SG50 festivities.
