Foo Say Kian Tips for success

Decisions magazine – Issue 14

Foo Say Kian is not only a Deloitte Scholar and Deloitte Student Ambassador currently doing his undergraduate studies at National University of Singapore, he is also part of the Singapore softball team that clinched a historic Gold medal at the recent SEA Games.

We caught up with Say Kian after the Games to find out how he feels about his team’s Gold medal win and being a Deloitte Scholar and Student Ambassador.

How was your experience at the recent SEA Games 2019 where the Singapore softball team won gold medal?

It was fulfilling to know that our efforts paid off as overcoming the local powerhouse on their home soil was not an easy task. The difficulties and challenges encountered along the way definitely made this victory sweeter. Hopefully we can achieve better results in the future in the World Championships and maintain our Gold in the next SEA Games!

When and how did you first start playing softball?

I started playing softball when I was in secondary one during the CCA trials. I was selected for the school team and that was how my softball journey started.

What do you love most about softball?

I love the thrill that I get from playing the game. There is so much uncertainty and you will never know the outcome until the game ends. Softball is different as it is not a time-based game, so no matter the score there is still hope until the final out.

What is it like to be a Deloitte Scholar?

The flexibility of the scholarship enables me to dedicate more time to my softball trainings and juggle my studies and sports. There are many opportunities a Deloitte Scholar is presented with including networking sessions and lunch sessions with my Mentor Partner. Everyone whom I have interacted with at Deloitte has been friendly and patient. I definitely look forward to participating in the upcoming events in the future.

What do you like about being a Deloitte Student Ambassador?

I like that I am part of a company who supports the local sporting scene so much. Although I have not started working, but I feel like I am already part of the Deloitte family. It’s definitely been an honour to be a Deloitte Student Ambassador and to be part of Deloitte! I have shared my internship experiences with my peers and also referred my friends to join Deloitte.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I enjoy catching up with friends over a meal, as well as participating in outdoor activities such as cycling. I have also picked up an interesting hobby which is keeping fish tanks. Taking care of the tanks as well as designing them is actually a stress reliever for me.

Top Tips for Success:

#1: Priortise your commitments and allocate more time to stuff that is of high importance.

#2: Time management is key to balancing my hectic National softball training schedule with my studies.

#3: Proper planning to achieve goals.
