Diving deeper into environmental issues
Decisions magazine – Issue 14
Meet diving enthusiast, Juhi Vashi, Deloitte Singapore Tax & Legal Senior Manager, who has clocked a total of 65 dives to date!
Why scuba diving?
I have always enjoyed unique travel experiences. Through diving, I am able to gain access to a landscape that is rich and diverse; it is just like an incredible wildlife experience.
Tell us about the best diving place that you went to.
Menjangan in Bali was overflowing with underwater life and colourful coral. Crete, in Greece, stands out too as there was a 400-year old giant anchor embedded vertically in the ocean floor at 30 meters depth.

What was your most memorable diving experience to date?
Diving in the Philippines with manta rays. It was a drift dive with strong, cold currents, and we needed to hook ourselves to the ocean floor to maintain position while waiting for the mantas to swim past. It was an exciting dive experience.
What was one thing about diving that shocked you the most?
The degree of pollution and the extent of the damage to marine ecosystem. I have picked up plastic on a number of dives in the most remote locations. Ocean currents that carry nutrients for underwater life unfortunately also transport poisonous plastic on an alarming scale.
Do you have any environmental advocacies that you strongly stand by?
It might not be feasible for everyone to dedicate a huge amount of time and resources to environmental changes and that is okay. As far as possible, if we can be mindful of the impact that we have on our environment and take small steps to make a positive contributions (whether is it via donations to environmental organisations, part-time volunteer work etc.), when compounded across a large group, it can make a remarkable difference.
How do you think people can contribute to save the environment?
Minimising the use of plastics in lunch boxes, bottles, straws and being more energy efficient in our day to day lives.
