Experience is everything
The UK leisure consumer
Leisure spending is off to a good start in 2019 with consumers spending more in almost all leisure categories in Q1 2019 compared to previous year. Our latest report discusses how consumer behaviour and leisure spending has changed since 2016 and how it might evolve over the coming months.
The behaviour of the leisure consumer continues to be a strong indicator of the prospects for the UK economy. Despite the wider political uncertainty, consumers’ passion for experiences has meant that they have continued to spend on leisure over the past three years. However, as their incomes have been under pressure, they have had to be more selective, with big-ticket leisure activities taking priority.
Our latest report in the Deloitte Leisure Consumer series, provides a view on consumer behaviour using proprietary data as well as our views on the key trends and developments for each of the sub-sectors listed below.
Key findings
- 96% of consumers spent on leisure in Q1 2019, up from 95% three years ago demonstrating that this is still a key area for consumer spend three years on
- Planned spending for Q2 2019 is up across all leisure categories from a year ago
- 37% of consumers believe that political and economic uncertainty will have a negative impact on their financial position in the run up to Q4 2019 and a quarter believe they will reduce their leisure spending as a result of this
