Summer transfer window: spending update from Deloitte’s Sports Business Group

25 August 2023

  • As of noon on 25th August 2023, Premier League clubs’ gross spend in the 2023 summer transfer window was £1.95bn, according to analysis from Deloitte’s Sports Business Group;
  • With a week remaining until deadline day, Premier League clubs’ spending in this summer’s transfer window has already surpassed the previous record of £1.92bn set last summer and is on course to break £2bn;
  • Spending is £500m higher than it was at the same point in last summer’s transfer window (£1.45bn); it went on to rise by a further £500m in the last week of the summer 2022 window, including £120m on deadline day;
  • The average value of fee-paying transfers-in to Premier League clubs so far (£25m) is higher than last summer (£20m), with two of this summer’s transfers involving a fee of over £100m, compared to none last summer; and
  • Net spending of £825m is currently down by 25% on last summer (£1.1bn) thanks to a more active global transfer market bolstering Premier League clubs’ transfer receipts.

Calum Ross, assistant director in Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, commented: “For the second year in a row, the summer transfer spending by Premier League clubs has surpassed the previous record and looks set to rise above £2bn for the first time before the window closes on 1 September.

“This sensational level of spending appears to be the new norm for Premier League clubs. They are generating unprecedented levels of revenue, which for some clubs is combined with the receipt of significant investment from new ownership.

“As we approach the end of the transfer window, it remains imperative that clubs manage the buying and selling of players carefully and remain compliant with relevant financial regulations. Sustainable business plans are essential to support continued competitiveness and long-term growth.”
