Belgian interest in electric vehicles accelerates.

The 2020 Deloitte Global Automotive Consumer Study surveys more than 35,000 consumers in 20 countries, including 1,286 Belgians, to explore opinions regarding a variety of critical issues impacting the automotive sector, including the development of advanced technologies.

Technologies in the alternative powertrain domain are advancing to a point where they have offset some of the concerns we have seen over the past decade. While Belgian consumers remain concerned about connected and autonomous vehicles, the intention to remain with traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) is starting to give way to hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).

What do Belgian consumers think about electric vehicle (EV) technology?

Demand for electrified vehicles accelerates

In 2020, 29 percent of Belgian consumers want their next vehicle engine to be hybrid electric, which is up from 23 percent in 2018. Nine percent of Belgian consumers would even choose an all battery-powered electric vehicle. Wanting a gasoline/diesel engine dropped from 64 percent in 2018 to 52 percent in 2020.

What do Belgian consumers think about autonomous vehicle technology?

Interest in autonomous vehicles decreased in most countries

In Belgium, 50 percent of consumers believe that fully self-driving cars will not be safe. Clearly, they need more evidence that AV technology can be used safely in real-world conditions. A handful of negative media reports can have a huge impact on consumer opinions.

Technologies in the alternative powertrain domain appear to be advancing to a point where they have offset some of the concerns we have seen over the past decade. However, to encourage the consumer uptake of advanced vehicle technologies, the automotive ecosystem still has some work to do in terms of making EVs as easy and convenient as internal combustion engines, lowering the cost of EVs, and figuring out just who will build and pay for the charging infrastructure.

What do Belgian consumers think about new mobility models?

New mobility models: Consumers remain resistant to multi-modal mobility

According to consumers, connected vehicles or the creation of low/zero emission zones will not solve the congestion issues that plague most major Belgian cities. More access to mass transit is perceived as the best option by 33 percent.

Yet, multi-mode trips are infrequent

Despite Belgian consumers perceiving mass transit as the best option to solve congestion issues, only a quarter take multi-mode trips on a weekly basis while 50 percent rarely use multiple modes of transportation. Younger consumers use multi-mode trips more often than older generations.

What do Belgian consumers think about connected vehicles?

Vehicle connectivity, privacy and data security concerns remain

Nearly half of consumers are concerned if data related to apps, and biometrics is collected, but they are more inclined to share sensor data on the mechanical status of the vehicle.

R&D continues, consumers lack willingness to pay

Consumer willingness to pay for advanced tech is very much an open question

This issue represents a serious concern for automakers and suppliers looking for an ROI on the ‘bottomless pit’ of R&D spending
