A select group of independent members comprises our judging panel

Canada’s Best Managed Companies applications are reviewed each year by a judging panel that decides which companies will be awarded the ‘Best Managed’ designation. This judging panel is comprised of members from each of our program sponsors and rotating special guest representatives.

André Allaire


André Allaire holds a Ph.D. and a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from McGill University and has worked in consulting engineering for over 30 years. He joined the BBA team in 2004, where he spearheaded the creation of a team of experts in mining and metallurgical engineering, giving BBA the impetus to carve out a privileged position across Canada in this growing market.

Known for his leadership, in-depth knowledge of the Canadian market, extensive management experience and professional rigour, Mr. Allaire is responsible for overseeing the firm’s strategic development and promoting its expertise from coast to coast. He has been the president of BBA since 2014.

David Chelich


David is currently Sector Head, Global Energy and Diversified Industries for the TMX  Group Inc. In his role, David is responsible for developing and implementing sector listings business development strategy and tactics for both the Energy and Diversified Industries practices for the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) and TSX Venture Exchange (TSXV). 

Cindy Greenough

Cindy Greenough is Executive Vice-President and Chief Risk Officer, Global Credit Risk Management at CIBC. Prior to this role, Cindy was Senior Vice-President, Chief Compliance Officer. During her career with CIBC, Cindy has held a number of roles with increasing responsibility including, Senior Vice-President, Credit Risk Management responsible for the bank’s Diversified Commercial, Agriculture and Real Estate portfolios in Canada; Vice-President, Wholesale Credit and Investment Risk Management; Vice-President, Portfolio Management for Commercial Banking; and Executive Director, Wholesale Banking.

Charlotte Herrold


Charlotte Herrold (she/her) is the editor-in-chief of Canadian Business and the special projects director for Media at St. Joseph Communications. A resident of the traditional ancestral territory of the Mississaugas of the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Wendat, she has an M.Sc. from the University of Edinburgh and has spent over a decade working in print and digital media.

Debra Hewson


Debra Hewson is President and CEO of Odlum Brown Limited, a full-service investment firm. Debra leads with objective and strategic insight developed from an accomplished career in the investment industry spanning over 35 years. Debra has earned a reputation for her vision, passion and dedication as a leader in the business community. She is a board member of St. Paul’s Foundation, Drug Free Kids Canada, the UBC Sauder School of Business Faculty Advisory Board and the alumni UBC Board of Directors. Debra is also an Industry Director and the Chair of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

David Hoffman


David has been Co-CEO of the Bragg Group of Companies since 1999, and now holds the position of Vice Chair of the group, where he has helped to engineer and oversee the development and growth of the company since joining more than 25 years ago.  There are 3 separate businesses included in the business operations of the group – namely Oxford Frozen Foods, Eastlink and Inland Technologies – as well as Nova Scotia’s largest wind farm and some important real estate and hotel operations.

David Sculthorpe


David Sculthorpe is a seasoned business leader with experience both as an entrepreneur and a corporate executive. Before joining Smith School of Business to lead its executive education portfolio, he held leadership positions such as: CEO of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, President Cadbury Adams Canada, Regional President Warner Lambert Co. and Regional President Pfizer Co. in South America and most recently was Managing Director of Compass Rose Advisors. David has led workplace innovation and talent development, mergers and acquisitions, integrations, turnarounds and transformational change initiatives in Canada, United States, South America, Asia and globally.

Chinmaya Thakore – Special advisor

Chinmaya is a Partner at Deloitte Private, Toronto with over 19 years of experience in public accounting. Chinmaya brings an exceptional understanding of the private company business environment in various ownership structures including, businesses owned by pension funds and private equity, professional partnerships and foreign parent corporations.
