Canada’s Best Managed Companies demonstrate bold and deliberate action in business
In its 25th year, Canada’s leading business awards program sees winners’ vast growth and success attributed to focused strategy, advanced capabilities and investment in people
Toronto, March 8, 2018 – For the 25th year, Deloitte is proud to announce the winners of its Canada’s Best Managed Companies awards program, recognizing best-in-class Canadian, privately-owned and managed companies with annual revenues over $15 million.
As companies compete more aggressively for market share, this year’s winners demonstrate sustained and exceptional business performance, achieved through their clear strategy and vision, investment in capability and unwavering commitment to talent.
“It’s been a quarter of a century and we continue to be amazed with the outstanding calibre and dimension of our Best Managed companies, each year growing in size and scope,” said Peter E. Brown, National Co-Leader of Canada’s Best Managed Companies program and Partner, Deloitte Private. “These companies are making bold bets and demonstrating deliberate action in ways we’ve never seen before – and it’s proving to be successful, positively driving their businesses forward.”
According to a recent Deloitte study, ‘bold bets’ are defined as courageous and deliberate decisions to make an impact despite complexity and adversity. They require making difficult choices that involve uncomfortable trade-offs. This year’s Best Managed companies are pushing the envelope and making bold decisions that accelerate their engagement in the global economy to further drive competitive advantage.
“We observed an increased number of winners demonstrating a global focus and expanding beyond the US as a primary export or expansion market; they are also making significant advancements in technology, innovation, R&D and upgrading core processes and manufacturing capability,” added Brown.
“This year's winners combine bold and inclusive leadership with a keen ability to leverage a leading trend or competitive edge to meet the clients’ needs,” said Dino Medves, Senior Vice-President and Head, Commercial Banking at CIBC, a long-standing sponsor of the program. “Their success demonstrates what it takes to make a difference both inside and outside their companies."
In addition to making proven investments in broad business capabilities, 2018’s Best Managed companies show a deep and dedicated commitment to talent, with an emphasis on building diverse teams and establishing a team culture. “This year, investments into leadership development and managing talent was a key trend among Best Managed companies,” said Lorrie King, National Co-Leader of Canada’s Best Managed Companies program and Partner, Deloitte Private. “Best Managed companies truly and authentically recognize the significance of their people – and acknowledge that their people help differentiate them from their competitors in the marketplace.”
2018 winners are characterized by being clear on purpose and vision, building toward a foundation of delivery excellence, and committed to their workforce. Over the last 25 years, a combination of “play to win” attributes have contributed to the success, resilience and longevity of Best Managed winners. This year, more than 200 companies reached Platinum Club status, having maintained their Best Managed designation for seven years or more.
To commemorate 25 years of Canada’s Best Managed Companies, Deloitte will release a special report that examines the factors behind their long-term success, just in time for the annual Best Managed Symposium in April. Best Managed is a flagship program presented by Deloitte Private, a division of Deloitte exclusively focused on serving private clients of all sizes. Generation after generation, Deloitte Private has been by the side of the entrepreneurs transforming Canada’s economy - and under its wing, the Best Managed Program has grown to include 453 companies, offering a strong network to support the 2018 44 new winners.
