Deloitte Global Employer Services

Following the opportunities around the globe

Andrea Au is an adventurer, driven to explore and get ahead of what’s next. That passion to be at the center of innovation led her to leave a management consulting job in Sydney, Australia, travel across South America, and finally put down roots in London. “A lot of cutting-edge mobility work was coming out of London, and a few months before I landed in the UK, I had sent my resume to the Deloitte Global Employer Services (GES) team,” says Andrea, who is now a Tax Manager in the Global Workforce practice in Deloitte Australia. Her timing was perfect.

Deloitte UK’s GES business was hiring—looking for someone with a consulting background to help build their Global Mobility Transformation team. “I told the partners interviewing me that I get my energy and sense of purpose from working on something new,” she says. “They trusted that I would bring that energy, transfer my skills, and learn quickly, and in 2012, they hired me.”

With a team of four professionals, Andrea worked to create a service offering that, at the time, was relatively new to the EMEA market. Developing methodologies and trainings, running multi-client and mobility labs, supporting clients through headquarter relocations, and HR, talent, and rewards projects were all part of the successful Global Mobility Transformation practice. Four years later, there were 17 on the team, the Deloitte UK practice was a market leader, and Andrea was off to her next adventure: starting the new Global Workforce practice in Sydney, Australia.

This time, Andrea is building a practice from the ground up, and she is flying solo; no team, but she has plenty of leadership support. ”I’ve been given a lot of freedom, independence, and trust,” says Andrea. “The partners’ trust that I will bring my experience from London, apply what worked well, and build a Global Workforce practice in Asia Pacific—has been extraordinary. That trust has not only motivated me to deliver, it has provided me with opportunities to step outside my comfort zone, learn and grow.”

Establishing a regional Global Workforce practice that is highly regarded by clients and her Deloitte colleagues, and, is of course, known for its innovation is Andrea’s goal. The market is already recognizing our unique capability in Australia with strong word of mouth recommendations from large listed entities. Global Workforce is becoming a key differentiator and has opened doors with clients where Deloitte is not the existing mobility tax or immigration provider. Staying ahead of what’s new and next in the market and what clients need are also priorities. “If I can do all that, it will be a big tick in the box for me,” says Andrea.

Opportunity, adventure, and growth are what drive Andrea, and she has found all of this with GES. “As a manager building a new practice, I have been thrown in the deep end,” she concludes. “Often, I’m the sole mobility subject matter expert at client meetings, and the partners trust me to take the practice where I want it to and it should go. There aren’t many organizations where I would have this kind of support, freedom, and opportunity. That’s why I’m building my career here.”
