Life at Deloitte

Aspire to Inspire

Decisions magazine – Issue 14

We speak to Cavyn Chong, Singapore Management University Accountancy (SMU) student and recipient of the Deloitte Inspire Award, who is not only active in a myriad of school activities but also in community service. Most recently in October, his team came in as the first runner-up in the Asia Private Equity Club SMU Venture Capital Case competition, an initiative which aims to spark students’ interest in the Venture Capital investment process.

Why did you choose to apply for the Deloitte Inspire Award?

I came to know about the award from Ms Seah Gek Choo, Deloitte Singapore Talent Partner, during a networking event at the Singapore Management University. I applied for the Award as I thought it was really refreshing how an organisation is looking to reward students for their contributions in their co-curricular activities on top of their academic results. This shows the emphasis Deloitte places on holistic achievements rather than just focused on academic results.

Being a Deloitte Inspire Award winner has definitely affirmed my efforts in pursuing my passions along with balancing my school work. I strongly recommend students to apply for the Deloitte Inspire Award as it offers a chance to be recognised for their efforts in other facets of their schools lives.

Can you tell us more about your experience with the SMU Venture Capital Case Competition?

It was a really fun, albeit taxing experience as I was able to learn more about start-ups and understand why Venture Capitalists invest in them. The highlight of the competition was giving the pitch during finals and applying the newly acquired knowledge. It was really enriching to be able to finally showcase our work in front of the judges, who were professionals within the field, and our families and friends in the audience. The bonus was coming in as the first runner-up, as we saw our hard work come to fruition! Moreover, I got a taste of the flurry that comes with meeting tight deadlines – something crucial in all circumstances regardless of the context.

How was your internship experience at Deloitte?

My internship with Deloitte gave me the opportunity to explore a career in Audit & Assurance and my key takeaway was definitely the people and the culture. I made some really great friends during my short 10 weeks there! Additionally, events such as Inter-departmental Games, where I played football and the Audit Off-Peak party were really enjoyable and I felt they are a big part to Deloitte’s dynamic and vibrant culture.

What top tips do you have for interns?

Always ask questions – people in Deloitte are really willing to help, and the best way to not only learn but to perform well during your internship is to clarify any doubts that you may have.
