The beautiful game, serious business

Deloitte Social Impact helps social pioneer Vi-Ability create a Football CEO app

Earlier this year, Deloitte Digital worked with Vi-ability, named the UK’s Social Enterprise of the Year 2015 by SEUK, to develop and launch their first ever gamification app.

The game, Football CEO, allows the player to take over a struggling non-league club and turn it into a successful business at the heart of the local community. Unlike other games that focus on player selection, Football CEO aims to build knowledge and skills in the business side of the game. There is even an innovative feature that forces the player to balance their work and personal lives, adding a unique real-world challenge to the game. It is designed to teach young people important concepts about running a sustainable and profitable business, whilst being entertaining.

The project was delivered through Deloitte Social Impact, an initiative through which we offer our services at accessible rates to organisations addressing societal issues.

Vi-Ability, which was founded by ex-Arsenal and Wales player Kelly Davies, provides transformative training, work experience and qualifications in commercial sports management to help people get off the streets and into employment. We first started working with Vi-ability as part of our Social Innovation Pioneers Programme in 2013 and this year it was one of our Super Pioneers.

Supporting Vi-Ability to enter the gaming market took a true multidisciplinary approach, with teams from across the business contributing their skills and expertise - in particular, Deloitte Digital and the Sports Business Group brought their respective knowledge together to great effect

The game, which has received 4,000+ downloads since launch, is available on the App and Play Stores. Profits go towards funding places for society’s most disadvantaged on Vi-Ability training programmes around the UK and abroad. These programmes help people of all ages develop self-belief and job prospects, whilst allowing sports clubs to run viable businesses, ultimately benefitting the whole community.

The ‘Football CEO - beautiful game, serious business’ project has been named the winner of the Social & Environmental Value category in the 2017 Management Consultancies Association’s Awards
