ILF Master of Law students visit Deloitte Legal in Berlin

Intensified cooperation strengthens international focus

Visit of Master of Law students to Deloitte Legal and Deloitte deepens cooperation with ILF. The cooperation partners emphasise the increasing importance of involving international lawyers in the legal practice - and want to open more doors for this purpose.

After a four-year Corona-related interruption, around 60 students from the Master of Law programme of the Institute for Law and Finance (ILF) at Frankfurt Goethe University once again paid a visit to Deloitte's Berlin office on Friday, 12 May 2023. Together with the ILF staff under the direction of the ILF Managing Director Dr. Rolf Friedewald, they took part in professional and informative lectures and made contacts at the Come Together event. Deloitte Legal, Deloitte and the ILF are thereby continuing and strengthening a long tradition of cooperation.

Cooperation Focus on Internationality

The cooperation between Deloitte Legal, Deloitte and the ILF goes back many years and strengthens particularly the international focus of legal advice and consulting in the field of banking and finance. With its international study programme leading to the Master of Law degree, the ILF trains law students from all over the world at the highest professional standards in banking law. This cross-border expertise is also very valuable for the advisory activities of Deloitte Legal and Deloitte, which is something that attorney Dr Klaus Pilz (one of the co-organisers of the event along with attorney Dr Moritz Maier) emphasised in his welcoming remarks as representative of the Deloitte Legal office in Berlin.

Professional exchange on current digitalisation-related topics

The participants dealt with current digitalisation-related issues in banking law. Under the title "MiCAR and Payments - Friends or Foes?", attorney Christian Stedler, LL.M. (London), Counsel at the Hamburg office in the Banking & Finance team of attorney Dr. Mathias Hanten, introduced the legal implications of the Markets in Crypto Assets Regulation ("MiCAR"). This EU regulation aims to harmonise supervision of the cryptocurrency market across the EU from 2024 when it comes into effect, and therefore is already giving rise numerous legal questions and adaptation requirements.

In his presentation "The Future of Law - How to Organise new Processes, Technology and People in Legal Departments of Banks", attorney Dmitri Geidel, Associate at the Berlin office in the area of Legal Management Consulting, also provided comprehensive insights into his advisory practice at the interface of digitalisation, process organisation and banking law. The ILF students were able to contribute their ideas and international experience in the joint elaboration of a sample case.

Methodology of Deloitte's Consulting Practice: Center for the Long View

In addition to these legal-related insights, another lecture focused on the methodology of consulting practice. In this regard, the Deloitte Center for the Long View, which supports clients and project teams in the strategic development of future scenarios, was presented to the participants. Tobias Streller, Senior Manager at Deloitte Consulting in Berlin, showed how decision-makers can manage the increasing complexity of digitalised processes and workflows through a dynamic, AI-supported strategic approach.

Career Opportunities for Foreign Lawyers

Of particular interest to the international law students was also the presentation of the various entry-level and career opportunities at Deloitte Legal and Deloitte by attorney Felix Skala, LL.M. (Boston University), Partner in Competition Law at the Hamburg office and Talent Leader at Deloitte Legal. Felix Skala explained the career opportunities at Deloitte and the options available for students and young professionals in the various Deloitte entities. A special focus was on the entry opportunities for lawyers from foreign legal jurisdictions.

Practical Implementation of Cooperation

The cooperation between Deloitte Legal, Deloitte and the ILF also plays a central role in realising the recruitment of foreign lawyers in practice. For many ILF students, internships accompanying their studies were and still are a key first step towards a permanent advisory role in the Deloitte organisation. The openness of Deloitte Legal and Deloitte to lawyers from international jurisdictions can be seen as a unique selling point in the legal labour market and is promoted to a decisve extent by the ILF's educational initiatives. Given the increasingly internationalised advisory market, also and especially in the area of legal advice, strengthening the teams with colleagues having foreign expertise represents a key factor in the services offered by Deloitte Legal and Deloitte.
