Playing hide and seek in cyber space
Have you ever wondered about the people behind the scenes who are keeping our information and data safe and secure from cybercrimes?
Elizabeth Han, Deloitte Risk Advisory Security Analyst, is one of them! She shares interesting insights about her job as the cyber gatekeeper of confidential information and why her profession is so meaningful and special.
What inspired you to choose this career path?
I am inspired by the power of technology as I believe it transforms people’s lives. However, as technology evolves, so does cybercrime. I chose to become a cybercrime fighter and defend organisations against cyber-attacks so that I can do my part to make Singapore a safer place as technology increasingly permeates our lives and work.
What do you enjoy most about being a Security Analyst?
I like the fact that I am not limited by my job scope. My day-to-day work covers cybersecurity monitoring using Security Information Event Management, Incident Response including analysis of real-time security events, and DDoS Mitigation Service to protect clients’ websites and to ensure that these websites are free of threats and running optimally.
On top of that, I picked up skills such as crafting new rules to detect security events, writing incident response playbooks, and hunting for threats and hidden signs of malicious activities.
Share some of the interesting things you get to do as part of your job.
Cyber actors often mask their tracks to stay silent. Part of my job is to hunt for cyber threats that are lurking and left undetected in a network. It feels like a game of hide-and-seek.
I also get to attend workshops, trainings, and seminars to learn and exchange thoughts about the latest cybersecurity trends. Deloitte encourages us to attend such trainings to expand our horizons and to network with industry experts.
What were some challenges you faced and how do you overcome them?
Cybersecurity is a broad field with many domains that I need to be familiar with. I see them as opportunities to learn and I feel proud of myself whenever I overcome new challenges.
What is your biggest success in your career so far and why?
I “learnt how to learn”. In this ever-changing industry, I need to be always ready to learn new concepts and the latest cybersecurity trends.
Share some insights about the Cyber Security Associates & Technologist (CSAT) Program that you were part of.
The CSAT program is a joint initiative by the Cyber Security Agency and the Info-communications Media Development Authority of Singapore. Its aim is to train and upskill Information & Communications Technology professionals for cyber security roles.
The program’s criteria including taking a few courses offered by Coursera such as Cyber Threats ad Attack Vectors. The Coursera courses helped me to build a strong cybersecurity core and strengthened my fundamentals.
In addition, I had to obtain one of The International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants (EC-Council) Certificates. In my case, I earned the EC-Council Certified Incident Handler (ECIH). The ECIH program offers a structured and holistic approach to learning incident handling and response process.
Deloitte is a CSAT training partner, and it is through this program that I landed my current role at Deloitte.
