The service station of the future
Fuelling the renewable energy transition
For the next few years, planes, trains, and automobiles will continue to rely on refined petroleum products. However, the demand for zero- or low-emission energy is growing as support for combatting the effects of climate change continues to increase around the globe. There are many changes that are currently in play to reduce the share, absolute volume, and investment allure of traditional energy sources. With everything from the way people commute to the impact of climate change to the variety of vehicle fuel options, the service station is at the cusp of a major change.
Our latest report, The service station of the future, outlines three key trends that will impact the sector in the years ahead. They include:
- The rise of customer-centricity with a focus on changing customer expectations around convenience stores and the fueling experience
- The evolution of transportation and emergence of the mobility hub—how rideshares, e-scooters, and the possibility of autonomous vehicles could impact stations
- The impact of zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) on service stations and the sector in general
While it may require some more time before the next generation of service station evolves into a mobility experience hub, we must stay ahead by understanding how the energy market will evolve and be prepared to adapt. Ultimately, experimentation, piloting, digital tools, and scenario modelling are all important levers for a strategic, successful transition to a clean energy future.
