Energy systems pathways

Optimize your net-zero strategy with our insights on energy and economics

The road to decarbonization is lined with unprecedented challenges. Our energy systems pathways (ESP) asset brings energy and economic modelling capabilities and targeted insights about the risks and opportunities in the evolving energy landscape that can help you on your journey.

Navigating the energy transition

Mitigating climate change means all energy ecosystem participants must be prepared to take ambitious action. The energy transition continues to require enormous investment in low-carbon technologies to meet net-zero emission targets and regulatory requirements.

This calls for a well-planned strategy for investing in low-carbon technologies and related infrastructure for organizations throughout the private and public sectors. A substantial task in its complexity and scope, leaders need clear visibility to identify the key technologies, investments, and policies that will support the development, implementation, and operation of the transition. All decisions will also need to consider numerous constraints, from resource availability to a feasible pace for technology deployment.

That’s where our ESP modelling tool comes in: it enables the creation of robust and credible road maps to a net-zero future.

ESP is our system-wide energy model. It’s a powerful tool for guiding private and public organizations through the complex trade-off analysis needed for the energy transition process. With its academic roots and industrial application, ESP evaluates more than 150 technologies and quantifies the energy and feedstocks required to address the regional demand for heat, power, transportation, and industrial products. ESP demonstrates the relationship between investments, utilization of resources, technology deployment, and production costs while considering the impact of the latest market and regulatory developments.

This unique view of the energy system makes it possible to answer specific questions for any sector and sub-sector, and to better understand regional outcomes.

ESP is a flexible, transparent, and modular modelling tool. It performs a base analysis at a provincial and territorial level and can be expanded to include desired levels of spatial granularity (county, utility region, etc.). ESP’s wide range of indicators and level of resolution enable analysis of factors ranging from industry-specific arbitrages to regional road maps for achieving net-zero. It can also be used in conjunction with Deloitte’s quantitative economic models to depict the interactions between a range of macroeconomic scenarios and their consequences for the Canadian energy market.
