Mr. Edward Au, Deloitte China Southern Region Managing Partner
With the epidemic being contained, this year we were able to resume the roundtable discussion with the theme “Achieving ESG Global Standards in the New Normal”. In the roundtable discussion moderated by Deloitte Risk Advisory Associate Director Ellis Wong, Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Joseph Chan, Director and Head of Policy Research of the Financial Services Development Council Rocky Tung and Deloitte China Risk Advisory Southern Region Leader Melissa Fung jointly shared their insights on the emerging ESG opportunities brought by the new normal under COVID-19. In particular, the panellists discussed the initiatives implemented by the Hong Kong government in fostering the development of green finance. On top of the current government initiatives, the discussion highlighted the importance of nurturing talents for future ESG development with the efforts of universities, corporations and governments. Companies are encouraged to provide more internship opportunities to students from the ESG-related disciplines, thereby allowing the talents to gain hands-on experiences progressively. With the emphasis on both current and future ESG initiatives, the panellists believed Hong Kong would be able to optimise its potentials amid the rapid global changes.
Regarding the awards, in addition to our "ESG Leading Enterprise Award", "Leading Environmental Initiative Award" and "Leading Social Initiative Award" in 2020, there were two new awards for 2021, namely "Theme Award – Crisis Management" and "Theme Award – ESG Investing". Same as last year, the "ESG Leading Enterprise Award" has also been broken down into two company categories, companies with market capitalizations over HK$20billion and under HK$20billion in Category I and II respectively.
